Eternal Summers - I Must Winter

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“I Must Winter” by Eternal Summers // The Dawn of Eternal Summers (2012)

Eternal Summers’ new disc “The Dawn of Eternal Summers” is loaded with solid lo-fi goodies with a dream pop lean. “I Must Winter” is a clear standout with it’s ragged beat and soaring melody that brings to mind a stripped back Warpaint and Dum Dum Girls both at the same time. It doesn’t have the dreamy haze that was found on their absolutely perfect song “Pure Affection” from last year, but that was mostly do to a magnificent remix by Beach Fossils. Highly recommended for fans of Warpaint, Widowspeak, and Dum Dum Girls. You can stream the entire, excellent album over at Spotify.

Don't Believe Ayn Rand

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Don’t Believe Ayn Rand” by Novella // Novella EP (2012)

Novella have an interesting way of luring you in with a dark, ominous (near post punk) riff or two and then locking you in with a big, killer harmony that’s suddenly warm and inviting. Novella stand out in the swarm of lo-fi girl-band garage rockers by bringing something dark, brooding and sexy to the mix. They sound like they could have existed on some 4AD radio sampler lost in the past, and for me, that’s extremely exciting. Their new EP is out this week on Italian Beach Babes and it’s worth every penny. Highly recommended for fans of Warpaint, Dum Dum Girls, and (early) Throwing Muses

Dunes - Vertical Walk

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Vertical Walk” by Dunes // Noctiluca (2012)

Dunes are a Los Angeles band that have toured with Deerhunter and are signed to a label ran by one of the guys in No Age but sound sort of like some dreamy version of Dum Dum Girls and Warpaint jamming with Chrissie Hynde. I hate to name check so many people in a simple plug, but seriously, this band should be big time and whatever gets them a little attention works for me. They’ve got a sound that would feel right at home on a late 80’s episode of 120 Minutes, but they also feel new and exciting and relevant. Not always an easy task. Highest possible recommendation.

Julia Holter - In the Same Room

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“In the Same Room” by Julia Holter // Ekstasis (2012)

Julia Holter’s hymnals sound like she’s been praying at the alter of Broadcast’s church and that is just what I’ve been craving lately. Even before Trish Keenan tragically passed away, Broadcast was swaying further away from those eerie, yet dreamy compositions of their earlier output, but here, Los Angeles experimentalist reminds me so very much of those early, organ filled psych pop gems. I’m probably laying on my own wishes for her sound’s progression, but there is certainly something excited about what she’s done thus far (in fact, she’s a recent pick of Pitchfork’s “Rising” section). “In the Same Room” is a must listen for fans of early-Broadcast, Warpaint, and Stereolab

Warpaint - Billie Holiday (2011 version)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Billie Holiday (New Version)” by Warpaint // The Fool (Deluxe Edition) (2011)

Nope, that is not the same song that I posted as new somewhere around two years back, this is a reworking of that track for the forthcoming Deluxe Edition re-issue of last year’s excellent album, The Fool. The song has been edited down and remixed into a tighter, more dynamic track, but it still retains that smokey, haunting sound of the original. I might actually prefer the new version to the old. It’s just that good. The mixing work has been done by Steve Mackey, of Pulp, and it is set to be included alongside the other tracks from the Exquisite Corpse EP (as well as some various remixes) on the forthcoming deluxe edition of The Fool. Definitely check out this new version.

DAVID BOWIE // COVERED

Here you will find a collection of covers from Bowie’s catalog as performed by indie and alternative artists from the past couple of decades. I tried not to source too hard from any one tribute, and did my best to keep away from random live covers (there are only 3 included). All in all, I stuck with some of my favorites and some new ones that I had previously not known existed. Are there some covers that I missed - sure. Most of those were instances of choosing who I felt covered a particular track the best.

So without further ado, here are classic songs by David Bowie as re-interpreted by artists over the years.

Luminary Youth - Diamond Skies (Warpaint)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Diamond Skies (Warpaint)” by Luminary Youth

Here’s a track pulled from the 39th episode of The Afterglow (get it, enjoy it, reblog it - or ignore it, if you’d prefer). It takes the excellent “Undertow” by Warpaint and chops and cuts it into a tight two minute trip-hop number that barely resembles the original but is a great listen all the same. Check it out and grab the mixtape. Fun stuff.

Holy shit! I am finally making mixtapes again. After losing a lot of music in the great Macbook death of 2010, I’ve spent the last week or so trying to rebuild what was lost. Sadly, the halloween music is going to take some time as a lot of that wasn’t backed up because I’m a total idiot.

In the meantime, i whipped up this super awesome collection of awesome things that also sound awesome. I hope you enjoy it. It’s a whole lot of new stuff with a couple of songs that are from the last year but have recently found their way into repeat listens. Seriously, it’s all great. Don’t be mean. If you like your indie rock, dream pop, shoegaze, post-punk, and other assorted genres of goodness, you won’t be disappointed.

Don’t forget to check out the other thirty-plus hours of Afterglow mixes HERE.

Warpaint - Majesty

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

warpaint - MAJESTY

Another great track from the incredibly satisfying debut full length from Warpaint. Not too much more to be said about this band. They’re really fucking good. They sound like a lot of old bands that i really love but still sound completely new and interesting.

Warpaint - Undertow

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

warpaint - UNDERTOW

More Autumn-perfect music. This time from the lovely ladies of Warpaint.

I’ll call it a night after this one. Goodnight everyone.

8.) warpaint - BURGUNDY

There’s something so completely dark and victorian about that backbeat and those distorted strings. It immediately reminded me of two things for some reason. Chan Marshall’s voice and Rasputina’s creepy old haunted vibe (turned down a notch or two). The more i listened to it, the more i really fell in love with the stripped bare arrangement of it all.

I never would have guessed this was a group comprised of pretty girls from Los Angeles. I immediately jumped to the conclusion that i was hearing a group from the Northwest or even more dark and sad, Glasgow. But no, there they are. Experimenting in art rock and chamber pop in the sunny hills of Southern California.

Their Exquisite Corpse EP is solid throughout, but this particular track found its way onto my most played lists due in no small part to the bands’ wonderful ability to blend haunting vocals and atmospheric instrumentation into something genuinely pretty.

Also is it just me or do i get the feeling that if this band was around in 1999 they would have appeared on a episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” playing at the Bronze? Fuck all the adjectives i used above. This is probably the reason i love this song so much. I’m an idiot.
