Frankie Rose - Soma

“Soma” by Frankie Rose // STROKED: A Tribute to “Is This It” (2011)

With this week’s release of Frankie Rose’s excellent album Interstellar, there will naturally be lots of people (rightfully) talking about her, and so I thought I’d dig out her wonderful contribution to Stereogum’s The Strokes tribute from last summer. It’s a little more rock than you might find on Interstellar’s new wave and synth leaning tracklist, but it’s a good sign of where she was heading with her sound. Definitely get out there and track down Interstellar if you haven’t already. It’s definitely one of the highlights of the year thus far.

La Sera - Break My Heart

“Break My Heart” by La Sera // Sees the Light (2012)

Katy Goodman is back with another song that somehow manages to rival the catchiness of “Please Be My Third Eye”. This is another taste of La Sera’s forthcoming full length Sees the Light and it’s every bit as good as the last. Upbeat sunny garage pop with killer melodies and crunchy lo-fi guitars. I’m all over it.

Frankie Rose - The Fall

“The Fall” by Frankie Rose // Interstellar (2012)

It’s far too early in the year to tell anything of note, but if i had to choose the one album that’s received more plays from me than any other, it’s without a doubt, Interstellar by Frankie Rose. I’ve already done my fair share of hyping this wonderful new release, but I figured one more track on a slow day wouldn’t hurt anyone. “The Fall” is the closing note of Interstellar and it’s an ethereal beauty. Like some of the best ambient/drone work done by Grouper, but more accessible. The haunting layered vocals and lo-fi synth pop production make it one of my absolute favorite single songs so far this year. I could live inside of “The Fall” and be absolutely content. It’s perfect.

Frankie Rose - Interstellar

“Interstellar” by Frankie Rose // Interstellar (2012)

She’s three for three now. Following the killer one-two punch of “Know Me” and “Night Swim”, comes the title track of Frankie Rose’s forthcoming Slumberland release, “Interstellar”. What starts off as a lonely ballad builds steam and explodes into a harmony filled, space-synthed layered wonder that should pretty much insure that “Interstellar” will be an early front runner for album of the year (too soon? of course it is, but it’s really fucking great). Very excited to hear the full length.

“Please Be My Third Eye” by La Sera // (dir. Vice Cooler)

Here’s a video for one of my favorite tracks of the year thus far, the insanely catchy “Please Be My Third Eye” by Katy Goodman’s La Sera project. Hopefully you have nothing against pretty girls singing in sunny SoCal locales (see that shit i did right there), because that’s exactly what you get with this video. Good stuff all around.

“Please Be My Third Eye” by La Sera // Sees the Light (2012)

It’s been a good week for fans of the members of Vivian Girls. First, former member Frankie Rose released her excellent lo-fi, synth pop track “Know Me” to much excitement and now Katy Goodman’s other project, La Sera, has dropped the first single from their forthcoming full length, Sees the Light, and it’s a killer upbeat blast of lo-fi power pop. Highly recommended for fans of Vivian Girls, Brilliant Colors, and That Dog

Frankie Rose - Know Me

“Know Me” by Frankie Rose // Interstellar (2012)

Frankie Rose, formerly of Dum Dum Girls, Vivian Girls, and Crystal Stilts, is about to drop a new album on Slumberland Records and GorillaVsBear has the first taste of the lead off single. Of course, knowing of her previous band work you might expect something of a garage pop sound, but you’d be surprised because what you get is something closer to a lo-fi New Order sound, with a steady old school drum beat and steely, almost synth-like guitar work. It’s a dark, pretty lo-fi synth pop cut that excites me greatly to hear more from the forthcoming album, Interstellar.

Coasting - Kids

“Kids” by Coasting // You’re Never Going Back (2011)

Coasting is a lo-fi, garage rock band made up of Madison Farmer and Fiona Campbell (drummer for Vivian Girls) and holy shit do they ever know they’re way around a catchy hook. A couple of weeks back, Pitchfork posted their excellent track “Portland”, and now you can stream and purchase the entire album at Bandcamp. “Kids” is just one of the incredible slices of lo-fi ear candy that stuck out to me. Be sure to check out the Bandcamp page for more of this excellence.

DAVID BOWIE // COVERED

Here you will find a collection of covers from Bowie’s catalog as performed by indie and alternative artists from the past couple of decades. I tried not to source too hard from any one tribute, and did my best to keep away from random live covers (there are only 3 included). All in all, I stuck with some of my favorites and some new ones that I had previously not known existed. Are there some covers that I missed - sure. Most of those were instances of choosing who I felt covered a particular track the best.

So without further ado, here are classic songs by David Bowie as re-interpreted by artists over the years.

THE AFTERGLOW : EPISODE 35 (revived)

Those of you who enjoy great mixtapes, are in for a treat this week if i must say so myself. New Vivian Girls, Bibio, Lykke Li, Wye, Oak, and all sorts of other new goodness. There’s even a really solid soundboard recording of a Thom Yorke track that i was desperately hoping would be included on “The King of Limbs” (i’d been waiting for a better quality copy for a while).

Lots of great chillwave, dream pop, fuzzy lo-fi, neo-psych, experimental, and general goodness this week. There’s something for everyone. Once again, thank you for all the support, likes, and reblogs. Thank you. As always, these Afterglow mixes are best heard at night. Make out, drive, study, sleep, or fuck to it. Do whatever you like, but please enjoy it.
