RADIO SLOW RIOT // EPISODE ELEVEN (4.20.12)

The delay between these mixtape/podcasts seem to be growing during these busy months, but if anything, it truly allows for a stronger over compilation. This episode is all new music (with a couple of recent re-releases for good measure) and brought with no interruptions (outside of the intro), and a focus on dream pop and lo-fi with the occasional shoegaze and ambient track peppered throughout. You might also notice there are several covers this time around and that’s purely coincidental, as there just happen to be some great covers popping up as of late. I digress. I’ll leave the music in your hands.

Please share/reblog with others if you like what you hear and or support any and all artists that strike your interest. Stream or download as you wish. Thanks for listening to Radio Slow Riot.

The Fresh & Onlys - Do What I Came To Do

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Do What I Come to Do” by The Fresh & Onlys // Stash Rituals (a Mexican Summer Comp.) (2012)

While The Fresh & Onlys record the follow up to their excellent 2010 LP “Play it Strange”, I’ll take whatever jams I can get from them. Luckily, Mexican Summer has released a compilation record which features this outtake from the recording sessions that won’t be making the final album, and if that’s any indication of the quality of that album, then we’re in for a scorcher. “Do What I Come to Do” is a jangly, charging, garage pop jam that takes full advantage of it’s two and half minute run time by cramming it full of killer melodies and aggressive guitar lines and even a sexy horn line. It’s a stellar jam and highly recommended for fans of Ty Segall, The Men, and Dum Dum Girls

Gap Dream - 58th St. Fingers

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“58th St. Fingers” by Gap Dream // Gap Dream (2012)

Some days you just need something akin to straight up rock music. Cleveland’s Gap Dream has filled that need for me today with ease. “58th St. Fingers” has a laid back, autumnal sound that leans slightly to the sinister with it’s lo-fi rock sound. It feels and sounds like some sort of suburban late night fever dream, cruising around dark streets with no aim or intention other than to just exist. It’s a killer jam. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album. Must listen for fans of Real Estate, The Fresh & Onlys, and Woods.

The Men - Open Your Heart

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Open Your Heart” by The Men // Open Your Heart (2012)

Here’s a blast of that noisy, post punk infused power pop that keeps the blood flowing. The Men are back on Sacred Bones with a new album that’s less dark, foreboding, and more (as Pitchfork put it) Westerberg-ian. Fine be me! It’s been my desire lately to hear more of this - straight forward, well played throwback indie rock sounds, and The Men have pegged me dead bang. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but a must listen for fans of The Replacements, The Fresh & Onlys, and The Wrens (and maybe even a little Rocket from the Crypt).

Coasting - Kids

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Kids” by Coasting // You’re Never Going Back (2011)

Coasting is a lo-fi, garage rock band made up of Madison Farmer and Fiona Campbell (drummer for Vivian Girls) and holy shit do they ever know they’re way around a catchy hook. A couple of weeks back, Pitchfork posted their excellent track “Portland”, and now you can stream and purchase the entire album at Bandcamp. “Kids” is just one of the incredible slices of lo-fi ear candy that stuck out to me. Be sure to check out the Bandcamp page for more of this excellence.

The Sounds of Halloween

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

* in case you missed this post from the weekend, here’s a solid mix. Happy Halloween!

THE SOUNDS OF HALLOWEEN /// A Mixtape

It’s Halloween and what better way to get in the mood than by cramming your ears full of spooky goodness. This is a collection of some of my favorite halloween songs by a large variety of artists. The mix runs 80 minutes on the nose, and is loaded with post punk, garage pop, shoegaze, electronic, indie rock, and other assorted goodies.

Featured Artists:

The Moontrekkers /// Cults /// The Fresh & Onlys /// Jay Reatard /// Wolf Parade /// Joy Division /// M83 /// HEALTH /// Grimes /// Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti /// Ghostland Observatory /// Crystal Castles /// Siouxsie & the Banshees /// Dead Man’s Bones /// Echo & the Bunnymen /// Bauhaus /// North American Halloween Prevention Initiative

These selections are almost entirely culled from the already posted Ghosts of Halloween mixtapes, but those are separate files and this is a single audio file containing what is essentially a greatest hits collection of Halloween goodness. Reblog and spread the holiday magic before it’s all gone come November 1st.

THE GHOSTS OF HALLOWEEN /// PART|ONE

I’m starting off the Halloween season a week or so early with this, the first in a series of mixtapes bridging new and old tracks that have similar vibes and that fit together for your future Halloween parties. I wanted to connect some of the classic eerie rock tracks with some darker electronic numbers and all of the post-punk and goth pop in between. By no means are these intended to be a list of essential Halloween cuts. I’ve scattered some obvious choices with some less obvious ones and if you think I’m missing something, chances are they will appear on a later part of the series.

I hope that you enjoy the Halloween vibe and the darker atmosphere of the songs that would make for a solid listen with or without a blacklight-lit Halloween party behind them. Thanks for listening.

The Fresh & Onlys - I Would Not Know the Devil

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“I Would Not Know the Devil” by The Fresh & Onlys // Would Not Know the Devil 7” (2011)

Here’s a stomping blast of garage pop/psych pop goodness that will be front and center on any solid Halloween mixtape this season. The Fresh & Onlys are no strangers to gloriously catchy jams with a driving beat, but this one is really something else. Like I said, it’s got a serious Halloween vibe, and that’s not just from the macabre title, it’s got that spooky, classic surf riff to carry it further into dark party anthem territory. I fucking love it!

The Fresh & Onlys - Secret Walls

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Secret Walls” by The Fresh & Onlys // from the Secret Walls EP

San Fransisco’s The Fresh & Onlys have a new EP of 60’s psychedelic / garage rock throwback goodness called “Secret Walls”. It’s a follow up to last year’s excellent, “Play It Strange” and it continues that same level of excellence. You’ll even find a couple of more stripped down and laid back tracks like this and the incredible, “Do You Believe In Destiny?” (which i posted earlier this year). There’s something nice and oddly refreshing about hearing a band play a song straight up with a four part band and no studio gimmicks.

THE AFTERGLOW : EPISODE 35 (revived)

Those of you who enjoy great mixtapes, are in for a treat this week if i must say so myself. New Vivian Girls, Bibio, Lykke Li, Wye, Oak, and all sorts of other new goodness. There’s even a really solid soundboard recording of a Thom Yorke track that i was desperately hoping would be included on “The King of Limbs” (i’d been waiting for a better quality copy for a while).

Lots of great chillwave, dream pop, fuzzy lo-fi, neo-psych, experimental, and general goodness this week. There’s something for everyone. Once again, thank you for all the support, likes, and reblogs. Thank you. As always, these Afterglow mixes are best heard at night. Make out, drive, study, sleep, or fuck to it. Do whatever you like, but please enjoy it.

The Fresh & Onlys - Do You Believe in Destiny

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

the fresh & onlys - DO YOU BELIEVE IN DESTINY

This is just the kind of sound I was looking for tonight. A hazy ghost of somber old surf rock guitars and that marching band beat make for typical great listening from The Fresh & Onlys. They’ve got the dreamy vocals and jangly-guitars down pat on this track, which is the new single from a forthcoming EP called “Secret Walls”. Grade-A goodness here.

The Fresh and Onlys - Until The End Of Time

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

the fresh and onlys - UNTIL THE END OF TIME

Another of the chase tracks.

This track from the new Fresh and Onlys disc made the cut. It’s on the lighter side of the chase, but it’s upbeat and has a driving momentum and it’s just a great song.
