“Don’t Let the Devil Find You” by Dirty Beaches // Double Feature (2011)
The music of Alex Zhang Hungtai’s Dirty Beaches tends to sound like the sort of sound that you’d find creeping out of the speakers of a busted tv set in some seedy motel off of a creepy, dusty highway in the middle of the desert, under the blackest night you can imagine. It’s like David Lynch and Suicide teamed up to make some warped version of a road record, and it’s fucking incredible for it. This new track from the Double Feature split EP with Ela Orleans, is Dirty Beaches at his best. Not overpowered by layers of distortion, and featuring a more sturdy, straight up song structure. Not to knock the more experimental soundscapes, but there is something pretty wonderful about hearing his rich voice in more prominent role with a riff that sounds like something lifted from some imaginary jam session between Suicide and The Jesus & Mary Chain. It’s fucking awesome.
