Here We Go Magic - Over The Ocean

“Over the Ocean” by Here We Go Magic // A Different Ship (Out 5.8.12)

Here We Go Magic have released plenty of great music since their start, but they’re about to release something truly special. For their new album they managed to get longtime Radiohead producer, Nigel Godrich, to handle production after Thom Yorke introduced Godrich to the band’s music. The result is a giant leap in experimentation, maturity, and focus. “Over the Ocean” is one of the album highlights (hard to pick one, when the whole thing is a highlight) with it’s slow burning, ghostly atmospherics and haunting vocal delivery. It does have a decidedly “Radiohead” feel running through it’s backbone, but that’s all right. The sound is beautiful, dark, and lush. Highest recommendation for fans of Radiohead, Sun Airway, and Bear in Heaven.

“Make Up Your Mind” by Here We Go Magic // A Different Ship (2012)

Here We Go Magic are following up last year’s excellent January EP with a new full length produced by Radiohead sixth-man, Nigel Godrich. Personally, I’m always excited to hear anything that Nigel Godrich works on, and here is no exception, but I’m actually a litte shocked at the sound of the first single, “Make Up Your Mind”, which sidesteps the psych pop sounds of the past for something a little prog-ier that actually reminded me mostly of The Beta Band on a seventies prog-rock kick. Not a bad thing, just very different than what I would have expected them to sound like. Excited to hear more from this collaboration.

Halls - I Am Not Who You Want

“I Am Not Who You Want” by Halls // Fragile EP (2012)

Danceyrselfclean is absolutely right about this track. Take some Active Child flair-for-the-dramatics and wrap them up in the subtle-electronics of Jame Blake and you’re almost there with Halls. Of course, there’s also that familiar late-era Radiohead sound as well, but that’s more a textural beats thing than anything. Naturally, it’s probably not best to compare a new artist to such indie titans at this point, but the earmarks are there and now, after a song this strong, I’m certainly going to be keeping my ears peeled for more from Halls as this is the strongest release to date. Here’s hoping that the forthcoming EP delivers like “I Am Not Who You Want” does.

RADIOHEAD heading back into studio!

Thom Yorke is saying that the band is heading back into the studio in December to start work on new music. Hot damn. I love it when they have quick turnaround between albums. He also had this to say:

“It would be fun to have them ready when we go to play next year. I don’t know how we would release them. It would be nice to make it all part of the flow and just enjoy it – not think about it too much.”

RADIOHEAD // THE KING OF LIMBS // FROM THE BASEMENT

Stream the whole show in all of it’s excellence. This is what perfection sounds like.

Setlist:

Bloom // Daily Mail // Feral // Little By Little // Codex // Separator // Lotus Flower // Staircase // Morning Mr. Magpie // Give Up The Ghost

“Staircase” by Radiohead // Live From the Basement

What an absolutely pleasant surprise. I mean, the absolute best kind of surprise. A brilliant new Radiohead track from the forthcoming From the Basement: The King of Limbs session. It’s a dark, hypnotic track that actually feels a bit more In Rainbows than TKOL. It’s pretty fucking incredible.

Thom Yorke - Give Up The Ghost (Live at Cambridge Corn Exchange)

thom yorke - GIVE UP THE GHOST (Live @ the Cambridge Corn Exchange 2/25/10)

It’s an bit old at this point, but it never grows old and I’ve been aching for new Thom Yorke or Radiohead material. I cannot wait to hear what this song will sound like once committed to tape. It’s one of the prettiest songs i’ve heard in the past couple of years and as much as I love this live version, it would just be nice to hear a pristine quality copy as assisted by Nigel Godrich.

Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found

radiohead - HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY AND NEVER BE FOUND (Live Demo for Nigel Godrich)

I fell in love with this song so hard when i first heard it (when it still had the longer title) and couldn’t imagine ever loving the coming studio version as much, and truth be told, i don’t know if i ever have loved the Kid A version as much. It’s like picking a favorite child though. It’s impossible. At any rate, it’s absolutely beautiful. It was beautiful when they played it like this, it was beautiful when the committed it to tape, and it’s still one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

So goodnight. See you in the new year.

A MIX FROM THE WORKS OF NIGEL GODRICH

Continuing this week’s Mixtape Theme…

Nigel Godrich is a music producer, often referred to as the sixth member of Radiohead. He works with some of the best musicians in the world and continuously does fantastic work. He recently scored the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to wonderful effect.

Much like the Dave Fridmann mix from a couple of days back, i wanted to pick tracks from albums that Godrich has worked on. He’s a tad pickier than Fridmann so i was limited on my album choices, hence the duplicates on the Beck and Radiohead selections.

Also, toward the end, i chose two tracks from Radiohead and placed their live stripped versions next to their produced version to give a little comparison.

As always, click the title to get individual track downloads, or get the whole mix here.
