PMW’s FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2012
Here go the full lengths. These are this year’s albums that I most adored from front to back. Certainly, much could be said about each album, but in an effort to keep this short, I’m going to try and keep myself concise and provide with links to seek out the material in your own way.
Once again, I can’t stress enough, this is not a “Best Of” list. These are my favorites from the year, and the order could change on any given day (outside of the top 5 or so, which are pretty steady). My hope here is to point out some albums that might inspire you to seek them out, or hell - make a list and share your own. Whatever the case, you can’t go wrong with these twenty wonderful albums, born in the year 2012.
Click the Titles for Band Info and/or Purchase Info:
20.) “Beams” by Matthew Dear - One or the best dance/electronic albums witha real heart since LCD Soundsystem left the game.
19.) “Calendar” by Motorama - A Russian shoegaze band doing it as good as anyone. Deserves massive exposure.
18.) “S/T” by Melody’s Echo Chamber - Gorgeous, dreamy psych pop. Like a female fronted Spiritualized.
17.) “Space Between Us” by Daniel Land & the Modern Painters - If Coldplay became a dream pop band and worked with Robin Guthrie instead of Brian Eno. Super good orchestral dream pop.
16.) “Shields” by Grizzly Bear - A more mature, challenging, rock record than I expected. They’re pushing into some wonderful experimental sounds.
15.) “Nootropics” by Lower Dens - A swirling blend of ambient, synth pop, and psych pop that unravels more wondrously with each listen.
14.) “Interstellar” by Frankie Rose - A big gorgeous pop record that sounds equal parts the Cure, Deerhunter, and M83 boiled down into a killer lo-fi synth pop sound.
13.) “Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend” by Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Returning after a too-long hiatus and sounds just as powerful and vital as ever. Epic is an understatement.
12.) “True” by Violens - Dark, textured, and haunting dream pop that never misses a false note. Everything about it feel rich and real.
11.) “Celebration Rock” by Japandroids - A modern day Replacements who blast through songs with fist pumping urgency and an incredible command of a catchy hook. Some truly wonderful songwriting as well.
10.) “Tender New Signs” by Tamaryn - The most pure and ethereal shoegaze album of the year.
9.) “Heartbreaking Bravery” by Moonface (w/ Siinai) - An aggressively challenging album loaded with explosive emotion and killer hooks. Some of Spencer Krug’s best writing to date.
8.) “Channel Orange” by Frank Ocean - What else is left to say? This guy is an amazing producer, writer, and singer. He’s absolutely the real deal.
7.) “Soft Fall” by Sun Airway - Criminally underrated. A stunningly gorgeous surrealist dream pop album, layered and textured to sound totally original.
6.) “The Haunted Man” by Bat for Lashes - A massive achievement in big, lushly orchestrated pop songs that further proves what an incredible talent Natasha Khan has turned out to be - beautifully written and performed. One of my favorite voices in music today.
5.) “The Wilderness” by Cemeteries - Popping up seemingly out of nowhere, late in the year was this absolutely captivating bit of shadowy dream pop, wrapped in infectious hooks. Every song is a winner and if their is any justice in the world, “The Wilderness” will find a massive audience.
4.) “Kill For Love” by Chromatics - It took four albums, but finally I was drinking the Chromatics Kool-Aid. A lush and rich, dark, shadowy album perfect for late nights. It’s music for the dark, and it’s perfect.
3.) “Heaven” by The Walkmen - An immensely enjoyable album of big hearted rock music. An ode to growing old and getting your shit together. So consistent and powerful with every track. Some incredible writing here as well. Its nice to hear something that leaves you feeling optimistic and this late in the game, The Walkmen leave me feeling just that.
2.) “Total Loss” by How to Dress Well - Tom Krell returns with another heartbreaking, but equally soul stirring album full of power. Despite the often melancholic vibe of the overall affair, the album never feels depressing, but more celebrates life. A true original. Every ounce of this album is special.
1.) “Oshin” by DIIV - Clearly, I’m a dream pop fan, and this is the album that I feel like I’ve been waiting for for years. A dark counterbalance that hovers over the dreamy sounds keeps the album sounding original and vital. Every song has a killer hook, and just finds it’s way to embed in your brain. The most truly pleasurable listening experience of the year for me. It was my soundtrack from the moment I first pressed play. Perfect.
There you have it. Albums, EPs, and Music Videos down - Songs to go. Hope you find something to love here - I know I love every note.

Perfect.

“Cotton Flower” by Future Islands // Less Artists More Condos 7” Series (2012)

Baltimore’s Future Islands have teamed with Famous Class records for another installment of the label’s “Less Artists More Condos” charity series which has proceeds going to benefit the Ariel Panero memorial fund at VH1’s Save the Music.  The new Future Islands track is backed with another song from fellow Baltimore-ian, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat. This is the first track we’ve heard from Future Islands in a little while and true to form, it’s a blast of striking synth pop with a new romantic lean that immediately feels like your favorite song from some alternate universe late 80’s Cameron Crowe film that never existed. Let’s just say that I absolutely adore it, super fucking hard. Highest recommendation.

P|M|W’s FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2012 //first half//

Last year, I was a month premature (May is the sixth month of the year, right?), so this year I waited it out to make sure I’d heard as much of the goodness out there, as I possibly could have. Once again, I’ve decided to only rank my top three, and then the rest will be alphabetical. Outside of my number one spot, I’d say that it might change on a day to day basis, depending on mood, weather temperature, and or what I ate the day before. By this point last year, I’d already heard what ended up my favorite album of the year, as well as my favorite song of the year. That being said, there are still a lot of potentially great albums on their way, and that’s not even counting all of the wonderful gems that we have no idea about that will surely surprise us and become embedded nuggets of ear goodness in the months to come. So take this list with a grain of salt. It might be the same list you see again in six months, or it might be radically shifted. The only thing for sure is that each of these albums is wonderful in their own way and deserve multiple listens from all ears, everywhere.

* My mixtape of top twenty favorite songs of the year will post later this weekend as soon as mix finishes.

** Click Album title to stream album on Spotify.

  1. DIIV - OSHIN /// DIIV’s beautifully dreamy debut album hit me dead on in a way that I wasn’t expecting. The familiarity with the sounds drawing on all influences that I obsessed over in my youth, coming together in this new, but lived in sound - took my breath away. Having been a fan of Beach Fossils (Z. Cole Smith’s other band) for a while now, I was thoroughly impressed that the material stood out and has it’s own distinct sound. A fully realized debut album that gives me massive hope for the future of the band. KEY TRACKS (“Wait”, “Doused”, “Home”)
  2. THE WALKMEN - HEAVEN /// The Walkmen have been quietly (and not so quietly - have you seen them live in a confined space? fuck eardrums!) turning out the hits for a decade now and after always finding something to love about each release. Yet here, a decade in, they’ve produced an album so incredibly absorbing and likable that it’s like listening to a greatest hits album of one of your favorite bands. Even more amazing, the band swapped up some of their more anthem-like sounds for stripped back 50’s guitar and doo-wop influences and it fucking works every time! A gorgeous album about being an adult. KEY TRACKS (“Heaven”, “The House We Made (b-side)”, “We Can’t Be Beat”).
  3. MOONFACE - WITH SIINAI: HEARTBREAKING BRAVERY /// A dark and loud album from one of my favorite writers (and serial band starter, Spencer Krug). This is probably the most challenging album on my favorites list and it’s recently made a strong resurgence in favor, after I realized that I’d been humming about half the album for the better part of the year. This isn’t Krug’s masterpiece, but with Finnish rockers Siinai, in tow, it’s probably his heaviest (which is not always my usual pick). What is amazing about the album is that after the bouncing around in various bands for the better part of a decade, Krug feels at home here. Like some of his best material with Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, he’s at his best when he’s angry or hurt and you feel both on this album. The melodies and harmonies are top notch and if you don’t mind some tracks getting a little loud on you, then this might be your cup of tea. It certainly is mine. (KEY TRACKS: “Lay Your Cheek Down”, “Shitty City”, “Headed For the Door”)

///THE REST (alphabetical)///

Okay, so I guess that’s eleven albums, but fuck it - limits are a waste of time. The podcast/mixtape of my favorite single tracks (not singles, but single songs) will go up tomorrow. It’s a doozy. As for the albums, I’m sure I probably missed something (I’m already regretting the absence of Echo Lake), but I’m sticking to what I had written down. How about you? Did I get it right-ish enough for you? Spill blood in my mailbox if you must.

Thanks for listening and tune in tomorrow for the big half year roundup mixtape. Take care!

DREAMING AWAKE SOMETIMES // A P|M|W MIXTAPE BLOCK

I’ve been talking for a while about getting into popping out two hour mix blocks that follow a general theme, but don’t exactly adhere to the need to be hot new releases. This is the first attempt at cracking that nut. Here you will find 120 minutes of dream pop and shoegaze and all things in between. I liken it to a perfect two hour block from my favorite imaginary radio station (with zero interruptions). Some of these tracks are old, some are new - but here age doesn’t matter. It’s more settling into a time and space of late night listening for comedown. The afterglow, if you will.

RADIO SLOW RIOT // Episode Nine (2.21.12)

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me and that’s certainly gone and cut into my podcasting time, not to mention the recent issue with Mediafire which caused all back catalog hosting to disappear (remedy coming soon) and it’s affect on free time. However, I managed to squeeze a mixtape/podcast out this week with some of the more exciting releases in the past couple of weeks, as well as a couple of choice older gems. I kept my intros light to maintain a solid vibe and flow and so I won’t drag it out here any further.

“Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips” by Moonface // With Siinai: Heartbreaking Bravery (2012)

Spencer Krug forever has my attention and this new track from his forthcoming Moonface album (release date: April 17th) is exactly the blast of driving psych pop that I have been craving. I was a big fan of the last Moonface release, but this feels like something more akin to his early Wolf Parade material and I must say that I have missed the straight up rock sounds of Krug. Fuck me running, this is great stuff.

Chad VanGaalen - Brighter Lights

“Brighter Lights” by Chad VanGaalen // Garbage Island #1 (2011)

Chad VanGaalen is a prolific artist, but the bulk of his output is not given the traditional release by Sub Pop. Instead he releases much of it as lo-fi, bedroom cassette recordings on his own Flemish Eye records. This is one such example of what awaits. A jangly, lovely, lo-fi folk sing along from the Garbage Island #1 collection. Currently there are 8 tapes in the collection, each with handmade art and the profits of which all go to charity. VanGaalen does amazing work in whatever capacity you seek him out (music, painting, charitable work) and these collections are proof positive that he’s someone deserving of a little extra attention.

“The Way You Wish You Could Live in the Storm” by Moonface // Unreleased

New Spencer Krug material for me to obsess over? Thank you. Don’t mind if I do. This is just the kind of Krug that gets me excited. The kind of music that sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a love story that takes place in a haunted roller disco (see also, “Fancy Claps”, “A Day in the Graveyard Pt. 2”, etc…). I absolutely love this track. It’s not available on the forthcoming album, Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hope For (out August 2nd - happy birthday to me), but you can get it for free at the Moonface homepage.

New music from Spencer Krug is never anything to turn away from, so here is the first bit of music from his new EP under the Moonface moniker. It’s pretty great to have him back after being away for a little while.

Can’t exactly track down a full version of this track to stream because it’s twenty minutes long, but some kind soul was good enough to upload a truncated version of the first movement of Spencer Krug’s excellent Moonface project from a couple of years back. I’ve recently been on a kick of digging out old Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown material to get re-acquainted with, and oddly I had actually forgotten this existed. Shame too, because it’s just so damn good. I hope Krug gets the bug and starts producing new music again soon. I miss his creative output.
