Silversun Pickups - Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)

“Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)” by Silversun Pickups // Neck of the Woods (2012)
Silversun Pickups are keeping the widescreen, shoegazing guitar rock alive and that’s a noble thing. In fact, this new single feels much more mature than I expected out of the new album (“Neck of the Woods”, due May 8th). It’s heavy, dark and melodic, which is where they’re at their best, but luckily they’ve left behind the unnecessary need to shred as they have done in the past. It’s a great effort from the band and hopefully a sign of where the album is going to be heading.

Mint Julep - Cherry Radio

“Cherry Radio” by Mint Julep // Save Your Season (2011)
The new full length from Mint Julep is an dreamy, shoegazey beauty and you can stream the whole thing over at Soundcloud right now, courtesy of The Line of Best Fit. One of the standout tracks in an album loaded with ear goodies, is this one, “Cherry Radio”. It driving beat matches up nicely with the airy, ethereal synths and otherworldly vocals. Definitely a must listen for fans of Slowdive, Secret Shine, and Lush.

Deep Cut - About Face

“About Face” by Deep Cut // Disorientation (2011)
The new full length from Deep Cut has plenty of great tracks because the band pretty much sounds like a cross between mid-90’s shoegazers, Lush, and present day dream poppers The Radio Dept. It’s a potent mix of goodness. This track in particular shares a good deal in common with both of those great bands. It’s got a driving guitar line that feels as melancholic as it does energetic, and the vocal melody is designed to get lodged in your brain for days on end. It’s quickly became one of the my favorite songs of the past few months. It’s an absolute keeper.
THE MAGNETIC FIELDS // COVERED
Here you will find a collection of covers from the catalog of The Magnetic Fields, as performed by indie bands over the past decade. I have actually had this sitting around for a few months and had forgotten that it was never posted, but lo and behold, I found it and figured it was time. This is a bit smaller than the previous Covered Mixtapes, but that’s all right because there is not a sore recording in the bunch.
So, without further ado, here’s a collection of songs originally performed by The Magnetic Fields as re-interpreted by artists over the years.
