RADIO SLOW RIOT // EPISODE ELEVEN (4.20.12)
The delay between these mixtape/podcasts seem to be growing during these busy months, but if anything, it truly allows for a stronger over compilation. This episode is all new music (with a couple of recent re-releases for good measure) and brought with no interruptions (outside of the intro), and a focus on dream pop and lo-fi with the occasional shoegaze and ambient track peppered throughout. You might also notice there are several covers this time around and that’s purely coincidental, as there just happen to be some great covers popping up as of late. I digress. I’ll leave the music in your hands.
Please share/reblog with others if you like what you hear and or support any and all artists that strike your interest. Stream or download as you wish. Thanks for listening to Radio Slow Riot.

Eternal Summers - I Must Winter
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“I Must Winter” by Eternal Summers // The Dawn of Eternal Summers (2012)
Eternal Summers’ new disc “The Dawn of Eternal Summers” is loaded with solid lo-fi goodies with a dream pop lean. “I Must Winter” is a clear standout with it’s ragged beat and soaring melody that brings to mind a stripped back Warpaint and Dum Dum Girls both at the same time. It doesn’t have the dreamy haze that was found on their absolutely perfect song “Pure Affection” from last year, but that was mostly do to a magnificent remix by Beach Fossils. Highly recommended for fans of Warpaint, Widowspeak, and Dum Dum Girls. You can stream the entire, excellent album over at Spotify.
Dunes - Vertical Walk
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Vertical Walk” by Dunes // Noctiluca (2012)
Dunes are a Los Angeles band that have toured with Deerhunter and are signed to a label ran by one of the guys in No Age but sound sort of like some dreamy version of Dum Dum Girls and Warpaint jamming with Chrissie Hynde. I hate to name check so many people in a simple plug, but seriously, this band should be big time and whatever gets them a little attention works for me. They’ve got a sound that would feel right at home on a late 80’s episode of 120 Minutes, but they also feel new and exciting and relevant. Not always an easy task. Highest possible recommendation.

Real Estate - Easy
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Easy” by Real Estate // Days (2011)
Most of my most anticipated albums of the year have come and gone, but Real Estate’s October 18th release of Days is still on the horizon and every new taste makes me more and more excited. The breezy jangle pop feel has a melancholic edge that makes it prime material for this time of year. I’m pretty much hooked on this jam today. Highest Recommendation.

“All I Have to do is Dream” by Tashaki Miyaki // Originally by The Everly Brothers
I’m a sucker for old 50’s and early 60’s pop classics being covered by new bands. I don’t know what it is about it, but I suppose maybe it’s because then I can listen to those old school pop melodies without looking like a total square. That being said, here’s a rock solid cover of one of those great old tracks from the Everly Brothers updated by Tashaki Miyaki and offering up a dreamy lo-fi, shoegazey spin on the classic. Definitely worth a good few listens.

Coma Cinema - Burn A Church
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Burn a Church” by Coma Cinema // from the Abandoned Lands
Mat Cothran of Coma Cinema was kind enough to offer up an excellent new (free) EP to make the weekend a little brighter. It’s pretty absurd how much I love the output of this band. In very little time, they’ve become one of the my favorite bands in the world right now. I adore the work. Speaking of the work, this track contains a sample from one of my all-time favorite songs (“Cheree” by Suicide) which makes it that much more stellar. Give it a listen and grab the new EP. It’s really great work.

Wise Blood - Penthouse Suites
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Penthouse Suites” by Wise Blood // bonus track from the These Wings EP
Wise Blood just gets better with each release. There seems to feel like an ongoing evolution of songcraft within his work, from the chopped and warped bangers that first trickled out to the latest tracks that harbor more of emotional core while still utilizing a hazy lo-fi r&b production, they’re just getting better and better. These Wings is one of my most anticipated releases of the summer and if it’s anything like this, i’m going to be a very happy consumer.

PERFECT MIDNIGHT WORLD : EPISODE TWO // MAY 8TH, 2011
Lots of great stuff this week. Dug out some older tracks that I hadn’t recently given proper attention, so that’s fun to hear, but as usual, the vibe stays in the relaxed atmosphere. So new or old, you’re going to be in a consistently dreamy vibe. Oh, and the mixtape is back this week.
But first, check out the podcast and if you like what you hear, seek out the bands. Thanks for listening.

No Demons Here - Every Second Darker
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Every Second Darker” by No Demons Here // from the album In Aluminum Headache
There’s a sweet little melody underneath all that murky guitar and melancholy. “Every Second Darker” sounds like the month of October, if October couldn’t sing in tune - and frankly, I fucking love it.

THE AFTERGLOW : EPISODE 29 (revived)
This Afterglow is a little different in that it’s selections span 30 years of music. That being said, it still holds a steady vibe of great music for night-listens. Tonight, you’re getting the goods, which includes one of my favorite songs of the moment (“Two Days of Rain”) as well as one of my all-time favorite songs (“A Party Able Model Of”) and all sorts of shoegaze / post-punk / dream pop / and general awesomeness inbetween.
Please support the bands that strike your fancy (especially the lesser known talent). Thank you for all the support, likes, and reblogs, and as usual these Afterglow mixes are best heard at night. Make out, drive, study, sleep, or fuck to it. Do whatever you like, but please enjoy it.

Lower Dens - Lower Dens - Deer Knives
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Deer Knives” by Lower Dens // from the Deer Knives 7”
How about some sweet lo fi, indie from Sub Pop’s Lower Dens? It’s great stuff leftover from the Sub Pop Terminal Sales Vol. 4 collection that was released on Record Store Day. Luckily Sub Pop was kind enough to offer it all up for streaming from their Soundcloud page. This track sounds like a hazy, out of focus fever dream with distorted vocals and tremelo guitars, but it all sounds really very pretty throughout the loud and the end result is a lovely little gem worth plenty of listens.
Jai Paul - BTSTU (demo)
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“BTSTU (demo)” by Jai Paul // from Jai Paul’s 2010 Demos
This killer track first started popping up a year or so ago (i think it was at least six months back when I first posted it), but it’s been remastered and re-issued by XL Recordings (and given a fresh Best New Music tag from P4K, but it’s admittedly very similar to this demo version) so now’s as good a time as any to dust it off and spin it a few more times. It’s a shit-hot track loaded with strange little quirks and beats that sound altogether danceable and creepy at the same time. Great stuff here.
THE AFTERGLOW : EPISODE 41 (revived)
This week is another solid week of great tracks from the worlds of indie, dream pop, shoegaze, and lo fi. I was a little busy this week with work things so I had to get an assist from Danceyrselfclean (who’s page I plundered for some excellent additions to this week’s episode) and the end result is some excellent fucking music.

Coma Cinema - Wondering
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
“Wondering” by Coma Cinema // from the album, Blue Suicide
I thought I’d dust off a track I originally posted back in September for a little late night listening from one of my absolute favorite albums of the past year. Also, I never want to pass up the chance to once again urge anyone who hasn’t, to head over to the Coma Cinema site to download the album, Blue Suicide (and Stoned Alone and Baby Prayers while you’re at it) for absolutely free directly from the wonderful artist responsible for bringing it into this world. It would be an absolute shame to not share his work with as many music lovers as possible.
It just hits all the right notes for me and I have a feeling I’ll be spinning this album for a very long time.
