“The Gateway” by Cult of Youth // Love Will Prevail (Out Now on Sacred Bones)

If you’ve ever wanted to hear what it would sound like if Bauhaus, Nick Cave, and Echo & the Bunnymen stormed the stage at a Mumford & Sons show, stomping ass all along the way, then “The Gateway” by Cult of Youth is your jam. Sean Ragon’s band is a gothic folk band that has toured with label mates, Zola Jesus, and who sway from wild as hell, goth-punk folk jams to dark and haunting goth pop ballads. There’s a through-line there, and that’s the gothic sound that’s embraced throughout. It makes for an intense listen, but an absolutely engaging one all the same. “Love Will Prevail” is chocked full of great tracks. Definitely check it out. For fans of Chelsea Wolfe, Zola Jesus, and Nick Cave.

“Kingdom” by Castratii // Eora (2012)

Castratii are a gothic dream pop band from Sydney, fronted by Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit. They create stark, haunting synth pop that can sound both dreamy and spooky in the same vein. Their new album, “Eora” sways from lush atmospherics to barren synth drones and back again with ease, giving artists like Zola Jesus and Chelsea Wolfe a run for their money. “Kingdom” in particular stands out with it’s pulsing back beat, gothic synth lines, and quiet/loud vocal harmonies. You can stream the entire gorgeous album right now on Soundcloud, or download “Kingdom” for free at Bandcamp. Highly recommended.

“Die Life” by The Soft Moon // Zeros (Out 10.30.12 via Captured Tracks)

It’s always an interesting day when San Francisco’s The Soft Moon releases new material. Today we’ve got a taste of the forthcoming album, “Zeros”, which drops - fittingly enough - on the day before Halloween. “Die Life” is dark as all hell, overflowing with sinister synths and a beat that won’t stop. It sounds like the score to some delightfully evil chase scene in a lost horror movie that still keeps you up at night. That being said, it also has a pretty awesome dance beat to it that plays well with the industrial and post punk rhythms. Highly recommended for fans of Cold Cave, Bauhaus, and Little Girls

“The Last Day of Summer” by The Cure // Bloodflowers (2000)

It’s the weekend and the weekend is quiet with new material, so I thought it would be appropriate to post an old favorite. Sure, the sentiment of the end of summer is a nice one, but mostly I’m posting this latter era track from the Cure because it’s one of the band’s prettier compositions from the post-Disintegration era. I remember buying the album on the day it was released in the winter of 2000, and immediately gravitating toward this song. Maybe it was the inner goth kid inside of me, but I immediately grasped the sentiment and fell in love with the track. Why not post it now?

P|M|W’s Favorite Albums of the 1980’s
It’s a slow weekend, and this has been hanging out in my drafts for a while, so I figure it’s time to answer a question that I get quite a bit - what are some of my favorite albums of the 80’s?
I could have drug this out into a massive list, or left it at one single album (“Strangeways, Here We Come”), but I figured instead I would spit out the first batch of albums that I would include and try to keep it light - somehow, that landed me at seven choices. Of course, I would never pretend to claim that these are BEST albums of the decade, I am merely listing them as my FAVORITES, and that pretty much equates to the list of albums that I return to more often than others. I might try to do a list for the 90’s, but I fear that one might be a hundred albums long. At any rate, here is the list - in no particular order.

“Strangeways, Here We Come” by The Smiths
“Disintegration” by The Cure
“On Fire” by Galaxie 500
“Purple Rain” by Prince & the Revolution
“Juju” by Siouxsie and the Banshees
“Darklands” by The Jesus and Mary Chain
“Let it Be” by The Replacements
“Forever Breathes the Lonely Word” by Felt
I urge anyone who’s unfamiliar with any of these albums (and who tends to like what I post) to give them a shot. They are certainly some of the albums that led me to where I am today. I’ll refrain from giving full on reviews, but if you’re looking for dreamy shoegaze (Galaxie 500, Jesus and Mary Chain), or early indie rock (The Smiths, The Replacements, Felt) or goth pop/ post punk sounds (The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees), to just amazing pop music, (Prince) I think there’ll be something in there for you. Crystal Castles - Plague

Plague” by Crystal Castles // Plague (2012)

And suddenly there’s a new Crystal Castles single to ravage ears and move bodies. “Plague” is more than likely the first taste of the forthcoming new album (possibly another self-titled affair), then again, it could just be a one off release to prime appetites for more new material. It’s packing a typically sinister, pulsating beat and fractured vocals that reverberate in and out of the witch-house-y atmospherics. If you’re a Crystal Castles fan, then you’re surely not going to be shocked by any new direction here, but it’s a great way to get you excited about new music. It’s also surely going to belong on many a Halloween Party mixtapes this year, with it’s darkwave house beats. Good stuff.

A Great Design
39,583 plays

“A Great Design” by Black Marble // A Different Arrangement (Out 9.9.12 on Hardly Art)

Black Marble are coming off of the release of their excellent EP, “Weight Against the Door”, and now, only 10 months later, they’re going to be releasing a full length by the name of “A Different Arrangement”. The first taste from that release is the killer new jam, “A Great Design”, which takes the focused, dark energy of that first EP and brings some new treats to the table in the form of a surprisingly bouncy synth line and an absolutely infectious melody. Instead of the sole post punk atmosphere of those earlier tracks, here you can’t help but feel the dreamier pop sounds of early New Order and (mid-era) The Cure. Whatever it is, it’s working because I’m now eagerly awaiting the release of “A Different Arrangement”. Highest recommendation for fans of Little Girls,  Minks, and Exitmusic

“Sulk” by Trust // TRST (2012)

Trust are about to drop their album, TRST on Toronto’s Arts & Crafts label (Broken Social Scene, Stars) and this new single, is pretty much all the music that I need to hear to ensure that I’ll be all over the full length. “Sulk” is a dark, melancholic, goth-pop rave-up that can just as easily have you dancing as it could have curled up in the corner, crying into your drink. It’s a gorgeous, eerie soundtrack to all future halloween dance parties. A must listen for fans of Hercules and Love Affair, Hot Chip, and early Depeche Mode.

THE GHOSTS OF HALLOWEEN /// PART|ONE

I’m starting off the Halloween season a week or so early with this, the first in a series of mixtapes bridging new and old tracks that have similar vibes and that fit together for your future Halloween parties. I wanted to connect some of the classic eerie rock tracks with some darker electronic numbers and all of the post-punk and goth pop in between. By no means are these intended to be a list of essential Halloween cuts. I’ve scattered some obvious choices with some less obvious ones and if you think I’m missing something, chances are they will appear on a later part of the series.

I hope that you enjoy the Halloween vibe and the darker atmosphere of the songs that would make for a solid listen with or without a blacklight-lit Halloween party behind them. Thanks for listening.

CAMERAS - I Know
from I Know

“I Know” by CAMERAS // I Know (single) (2011)

The first I heard of CAMERAS was their single, “Polarise”, which dropped last fall. This new track continues the gorgeous, dark, haunting sounds of that track and is a free Bandcamp release in advance of their forthcoming debut album. The creeping, hypnotic beat sells the song well enough, but those vocal melodies add an epic, haunting quality that makes this jam a fucking knockout. Highest possible recommendation on this one.

“Mer” by Chelsea Wolfe // from the forthcoming album, Apokalypsis

I saw some write-ups about this album a couple of months back and then didn’t hear much about it again (it’s not being released until August 23rd), but luckily Pitchfork reminded me this morning through their forkcast posts. This track has a dark, ethereal, goth pop / doom folk kind of thing (think Zola Jesus, Salem) and it’s pretty fucking intense. It’s also pretty much awesome, so it’s also got that going for it.

“Parallels” by The Soft Moon // Live from Incase’s Room 205 Series

Top notch performance piece from the industrial, goth pop recorded for Incase’s Room 205 series. This is good stuff for those who enjoy dark, melodic sounds and visuals that could induce seizures.

“A Color” by Tropic of Cancer // from the EP The Sorrow of Two

Dreamy gothic minimalism is the name of the game here. Not quite as loud as your average witch-house release, but I suppose it could fit in there as well. It’s beautiful, dark, haunting stuff and it’s definitely worth your time. It’s excellent night music.
