Beaches - Send Them Away

“Send Them Away” by Beaches // She Beats (Out 5.3.13 via Chapter Music)

The last time that we heard from Melbourne’s Beaches, they were taking us on a swirling psychedelic trip through a shoegaze dream on “Distance”. This time around, the band is back with another track from their forthcoming album, “She Beats” (Out May 3rd on Chapter) - this time, the breezy, summery, garage pop gem, “Send Them Away”. In just two track, Beaches have launched themselves to the top of my must-hear list by created confident, infectious pop songs wrapped in layers of textural gold. The band seems to effortlessly draw from psych pop, shoegaze, garage rock, dream pop, and anything else that seems to fit the bill when needed and that in turns makes everything that they do an exciting and rewarding listen. Definitely check out “Send Them Away” and try to imagine how great it’s going to sound blaring out of car speakers as you make your through a summer’s night under a warm, dark sky. Highest recommendation for fans of The Fresh and Onlys, Dum Dum Girls, and Tamaryn.

Colleen Green - "Heavy Shit"

“Heavy Shit” by Colleen Green // Sock it to Me (Out 3.19.13 via Hardly Art)

What better way to start off a long week than with a little bit of energy from Colleen Green’s forthcoming “Sock It To Me”. “Heavy Shit” is a track from the new album that wastes no time launching into a driving beat and buzzsaw guitar. Green’s vocals lead the way with a killer melody and airy delivery that balances the playful darkness of the song. It’s a great track and definitely something to be excited about for the full album later this month. Highly recommended for fans of La Sera, Vivian Girls, and Dum Dum Girls

Haunted Hearts - Something That Feels Bad Is Something That Feels Good

“Something That Feels Bad is Something That Feels Good” by Haunted Hearts // Something That Feels Bad Is Something That Feels Good” b/w “House of Lords” (Out 2.5.13 via Zoo Music)

Dee Dee (Dum Dum Girls) and Brandon Welchez (Crocodiles) are a married couple who make excellent music in separate bands. Considering the amount of material that they’ve clearly written about one another, getting them writing and performing together was bound to happen. Luckily, it’s just as great as their separate ventures. As Haunted Hearts, they give us a throwback Jesus and Mary Chain guitar band with killer harmonies and catchy hooks will be buried deep in my skull for hours. It’s not as dark as either band’s recent output, but that’s kind of the draw here - upbeat (yet always a little melancholic because why not) garage rock with shoegazer guitars and sing along choruses. I’m in.

PMW’s FAVORITE EPs of 2012
We’re talking EP’s. Shortplay albums. Not full lengths, but something different. No less important, and no less powerful. By no means, does a full album make an EP irrelevant, I chose to separate the two in an effort to shine a light on some smaller releases that might slipped by in the big year end album lists.
As opposed to the Music Videos list, here i’ll try to number the list, based upon preference and my number of listens. Instead of going for an even 10, I used Tumblr’s photo post number and left it as a top 9 for EPs.
Click title for band info and or purchase information.
9.) “The Night Before EP” by Stumbleine - Subtle, striking and completely original. Stumbleine are a trippy-dream pop band that uses hip hop influences to bring out hazy pop treats.
8.) “Undersea” by The Antlers - Not as immediately engrossing as “Burst Apart” but an exciting collection of four songs that seem to be pushing the band into interesting new ground.
7.) “Gallery” by Craft Spells - A collection of dreamy pop jams that carry more energy than a lot of today’s bedroom pop/ dream pop artists. It feels sort of lost in time, because I can easily imagine some outcast high school kid from 1989 putting these jams on a mixtape. They still sound fresh, but definitely indebted to another time.
6.) “Kid Games” by Airiel - Lovely, feedback heavy, ethereal shoegaze treats. Totally caught by surprise as to just how good this release turned to be.
5.) “End of Daze” by Dum Dum Girls - Impeccably crafted pop tracks that continue to delve into the darker territory that the band explored on the wonderful, “Only in Dreams”.
4.) “Silent Hour / Golden Mile” by Daniel Rossen - Grizzly Bear’s not-so-secret weapon drops a killer solo EP  of dark, mysterious material that crosses grounds as varied as folk and prog experimentation. For me, this contains some of the best material that anyone in Grizzly Bear has released in recent years. It’s just a too short!
3.) “Hiding” by Tearjerker - These guys never disappoint. From their dreamy shoegaze sounds to their more jagged hypnagogic pop sounds, they just deliver. This EP finds the band branching out into more experimental sounds, and without fail, they nail every note.
2.) “Kindred” by Burial - A short but effective three tracks is all it takes for Burial to create a mysterious ghost world that is filled with shadowy sounds and eerie vibes. It feels lived in, and inhabited by an artist that is not content with stuck in place. “Kindred” finds Burial taking his sound to an even darker place than before, and coming away with something incredibly easy to listen to, but also challenging and rewarding all the same.
1.) “S/T” by Indoor Voices - I was a big fan of Indoor Voices’s full length, “Nevers”, but I was completely unprepared for how stunning I found the follow up EP. From the opening strum of “Still” to the closing hum of “Hung Out”, there is not a weak note to be found. The absolutely jaw dropping, “So Smart” is one of the best songs of the year, hands down, and the other three tracks that are found on the self titled EP aren’t far behind. It’s a flawless release and one that deserves be heard by anyone who who enjoys dream pop - or fuck, anyone who just enjoys good music. You will not be disappointed.
All right. That is it for my list of favorite EPs of 2012. Albums and Songs of the year still to come. Thanks for reading!

Heroin by Burnt Ones

“Heroin” by Burnt Ones // “The Velvet Underground and Nico” by Castle Face and Friends (Out Now via Castle Face)

The Castle Face produced  covers album of “The Velvet Underground and Nico” is loaded with goodies. I’ve already posted “All Tomorrow’s Parties” by The Fresh & Onlys, and now I’d like share another of my favorites. This one from Burnt Ones, as they cover one of my all time favorite songs, “Heroin”. It’s long been one of the songs that turned me onto songwriting as a strong melody and catchy hook. I was given a copy of The Velvet Underground and Nico when I was a freshman in high school, and though at the time it didn’t crash me over the head in the way that it would later on in my life, it was always “Heroin” that stood out to me for its vivid portrayal of drug addiction and the narrator’s acceptance of that addiction. It’s powerful stuff, but also, it’s a fucking stunning song that surely launched a few lo-fi and garage bands through inspiration. Burnt Ones do an exceptional take on the classic, not shaking things up too much, just giving it a reverbed, shoegazer-ish sheen. It’s a fantastic version that deserves to be heard loud.

Beach Day "Walking On The Streets"

“Walking on the Streets” by Beach Day // Walking on the Steets (2012 via Kanine Records)

Kanine Records has themselves a hit here with the new single from surf-pop revivalists, Beach Day. Cracking off a little taste of Phil Spector’s girl group magic and a little Dum Dum Girls grit will almost get you there, but there’s something else at play here with Beach Day. It’s a staggeringly consistent commitment to the era. Gun to head, if you didn’t know any better, you could easily believe that you were listening to a newly unearthed master from the Spector era of golden greats. It’s loaded to the brim with instantly memorable melodies and dreamy jangle pop guitars that will do their best to convince you that it’s mid-summer and the sun is high and bright (hint: it’s actually pretty chilly out there, wear a jacket) Highly recommended for fans of Dum Dum Girls, Cults, or Vivian Girls

“Lord Knows” by Dum Dum Girls // (dir. Christine Turner)

Dum Dum Girls just released the excellent, “End of Daze” EP (via Subpop) so the next natural step is to promote it with some visual stimulation. Here comes the video for the single, “Lord Knows”. The video breaks out the occult imagery and gets all witchy (just in time for Halloween), as frontwoman Dee Dee partakes in some ceremonial bloodletting. It’s all very nicely shot and fits the band’s vibe quite well. Check it out.

“Season In Hell” by Dum Dum Girls // End of Daze (Out 9.25.12 via Sub Pop)

Dum Dum Girls are set to release their excellent new EP, “End of Daze” at the end of the month, but if you can’t wait then you can stream the entire thing right now at Soundcloud. It’s another step in the evolution of the band’s sound, from the early lo-fi, garage pop days onto the present flirts with dream pop and shoegaze and noise pop - they just keep getting better and better, but still maintain a level of familiarity that keeps fans coming back. The new EP is loaded with killer hooks and harmonies. The melodies will be stuck in your head for hours. It’s a wonderful listen. Sadly, it’s only five tracks, but that’s enough to hold us over until the next full length drops. Highly recommended.

The Vandelles - Miles Away

“Miles Away” by The Vandelles // Strange Girls Don’t Cry (2012)

The Vandelles traffic in the same kind of glorious, loud as fuck, surf-rock, post-punk that the Jesus and Mary Chain did back in the day. At this point, it’s a well worn sound and the goal should not be to change the world, but to simply play it well and write great hooks, and that is just what The Vandelles do best. Build swirling guitar noise around stellar harmonies that easily embed themselves in the back of your skull where they’re likely to stay for a few days. “Miles Away” is a standout from their recent album, “Strange Girls Don’t Cry” (available now at Bandcamp). The track tackles the wall of sound guitars with ease and uses the quiet/loud shift to killer effect, calling to mind the girl groups of the early 60’s, but blasted through an effects pedal and back out again. Killer stuff and highly recommended.

“Till the End” by The Raveonettes // Observator (2012 // Streaming Now @ Rolling Stone)

I almost find it strange how reliable The Raveonettes have become. They’re a band that rarely disappoints (even if sometimes they don’t always hit a home run) and practically releases an album a year (or two) at this point. They do their sound (60’s psych inspired, wall of sound production, shoegaze pop) better than almost anyone and their latest album is further proof. Following last year’s excellent, moody and dreamy “Raven in the Grave”, this time around “Observator” finds them turning things back up again, but hanging within the same dreamy territory full of lovely melodies and reverb drenched harmonies. The result is a fantastic album without a bad track on it. “Till The End” is a personal favorite, sounding like a dream pop lullaby crossed with an apocalyptic love song being blasted through decaying radio wires. It’s a stunner and one of the standouts of recent months. Highest recommendation.

“Lord Knows” by Dum Dum Girls // End of Daze (Out 9.25.12 via Sub Pop)

Dum Dum Girls continue to mature and grow as a band and as they do so, they are starting to sound like a glorious amalgamation of Mazzy Star and Jesus and Mary Chain. Here, on their latest release, “Lord Knows” (from the upcoming EP, “End of Daze”), they take the lovely harmonies that they’re so good at, and bring them into a slow burn, windblown ballad that feels like being lost on a dark highway on a chilly desert night. Absolutely gorgeous stuff. Grab a copy for the cost of an email address.

“Yes or No” by The Fresh & Onlys // Long Slow Dance (Out September 2012)

The Fresh & Onlys have become one of my favorite go-to rock bands. They are incredibly consistent and never miss an opportunity to write a killer hook that gets lodged in your brain for days. Their new single from their forthcoming full length (“Long Slow Dance”) is absolutely no exception with it’s driving guitar riff, rolling beat, and pitch perfect harmonies. It’s a fantastic garage pop stomper that demands repeat listens immediately because it’s two and half minute run time is over before it begins. Highest recommendation for fans of Ty Segall, The Men, and Magic Trick

It’s hard to beat the jangle pop vibe that Fear of Men pull off on both “Green Sea” and this b-side, “Born”. Sounding something like a mash-up of Belle & Sebastian and The Sundays, this dreamy blast of sweet melodies and lush harmonies is absolutely the kind of sound that I have been craving as of late. I can’t wait to hear more from this UK band, as soon as possible. Highly recommended for fans of Belle & Sebastian, The Sundays, and Dum Dum Girls

“I Must Winter” by Eternal Summers // The Dawn of Eternal Summers (2012)

Eternal Summers’ new disc “The Dawn of Eternal Summers” is loaded with solid lo-fi goodies with a dream pop lean. “I Must Winter” is a clear standout with it’s ragged beat and soaring melody that brings to mind a stripped back Warpaint and Dum Dum Girls both at the same time. It doesn’t have the dreamy haze that was found on their absolutely perfect song “Pure Affection” from last year, but that was mostly do to a magnificent remix by Beach Fossils. Highly recommended for fans of Warpaint, Widowspeak, and Dum Dum Girls. You can stream the entire, excellent album over at Spotify.
