SNL Says Goodbye to Kristen Wiig // Featuring Arcade Fire & Mick Jagger

I know it’s everywhere this morning, but it’s hard not to be a little moved and impressed that Saturday Night Live took a special moment to say goodbye to their MVP of the last seven seasons, Kristen Wiig. Doing so by providing a faux graduation ceremony and farewell dance soudtracked by Arcade Fire performing covers “She’s a Rainbow” and “Ruby Tuesday”. It’s an incredibly sweet moment, made all the sweeter by seeing the differentiating interactions between the cast members; Wiig starting to cry upon hugging Hader, Armisen staring directly into her eyes with a huge smile before saying what appears to be “I love you”, Samberg coming in off the wrong side with a big swinging hug like saying “fuck it” to the tears, but maybe saddest of all, Jason Sudeikis who from the opening of the skit appears to be dealing with some heavy emotions, nearly bringing the dancing to a stop when he gives her an extended hug before slipping off into the back. By the time “Ruby Tuesday” kicked in and everyone stormed the stage, it was a big party and Amy Poehler’s provided the best template for the celebration, just jumping around having a great time with a smile as big as the stage, because in the end, it’s not fun to lose some of the best cast members that have ever graced the SNL stage, but it’s exciting as all hell to thinking of what can come next from Wiig (and apparently Samberg and Sudeikis, who are also exiting). So, it appears we’re back to rebuilding years on SNL, but atleast we got to see a fantastic send off for one of the best that has ever been.

RADIO SLOW RIOT // EPISODE ELEVEN (4.20.12)

The delay between these mixtape/podcasts seem to be growing during these busy months, but if anything, it truly allows for a stronger over compilation. This episode is all new music (with a couple of recent re-releases for good measure) and brought with no interruptions (outside of the intro), and a focus on dream pop and lo-fi with the occasional shoegaze and ambient track peppered throughout. You might also notice there are several covers this time around and that’s purely coincidental, as there just happen to be some great covers popping up as of late. I digress. I’ll leave the music in your hands.

Please share/reblog with others if you like what you hear and or support any and all artists that strike your interest. Stream or download as you wish. Thanks for listening to Radio Slow Riot.

Please support the artists that you find and enjoy. Buy their music, merchandise and tickets to see their shows. Supporting them is the only purpose in doing this blog. Contrary to the opinions of some, music blogs are a great way to discover new music, but there will only be so much new music to go around if these artists can’t afford to support themselves through their art and commerce. Only use these mixtapes as a guide to find something to throw your (financial and emotional) support behind.

The Horrors - Suffragette City

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Suffragette City” by The Horrors // Originally by David Bowie

Seat Music is offering up a free collection of one take covers from various indie and alternative rock bands and the latest happens to be wonderful pairing of The Horrors and David Bowie. Sure, it sounds pretty much exactly what you’d expect The Horrors to sound like while covering “Suffragette City” but that’s a good part of the fun.

Glowbug - Gagging Order (Radiohead Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Gagging Order” by Glowbug // Originally by Radiohead

Well this is pretty nice. Glowbug have gone and turned one of my most beloved Radiohead songs into a glimmering, electro-shoegaze, robotic dream. It’s damn near impossible to best Radiohead at their own songs, so I’m not going to go that far, but this is definitely a great cover of a lesser known track (a Hail to the Thief b-side). It’s available on a new EP of covers by Glowbug, that they’re giving away for free on Bandcamp (feat. covers of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pixies, and The Smiths). Get on it.

Asobi Seksu - Little House of Savages (The Walkmen cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Little House of Savages” by Asobi Seksu // Originally by The Walkmen (2011)

Asobi Seksu have dropped this great cover of The Walkmen’s “Little House of Savages” from 2004’s brilliant Bows + Arrows. Gone is the originals crashing drums and explosive vocals and in their place are Asobi Seksu’s shoegaze-y guitars and pretty vocals.

Baths - Lammicken (BRAIDS cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Lammicken” by Baths // Originally by BRAIDS (2011)

Baths (LA musician Will Wiesenfeld) has dropped a gorgeous cover of BRAIDS’ excellent track, “Lammicken”. It steps back from some of the production flourishes of the original, but maintains the calm, dreamy beauty of the original. It actually sounds quite a bit like Múm covering BRAIDS, that’s no knock - the song is really that good.

pacificUV - Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” by pacificUV // Chrysalis (2011) // Originally by The Smiths

I’ll go ahead and say that i’m a very big fan of The Smiths. Some of their work is tattooed on my body, i discovered countless other artists through their work, “Strangeways, Here We Come” is one of my desert island discs … so yeah, I have a bit of a soft spot for the work of The Smiths. That being said, I’m not usually the biggest fan of cover versions of their songs. Not because I have issues with covers of my favorite artists, but mostly because Morrissey and Marr have such distinct sounds in their work that covers tend to mimic too closely or shift the sound completely away into an unrecognizable path. Sometimes though, a nice balance is struck. pacificUV, i feel, have struck that balance. I wasn’t sure at first, but by the time that shimmering guitar came and cut through all of the Jesus and Mary Chain like slow-motion-reverb-cool, i felt something really special. This is a pretty stellar cover. I’m definitely a fan. Big time. You can download all of “Chrysalis” for free over at Bandcamp

Little Girls - Believer (John Maus Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Believer” by Little Girls // Originally by John Maus (2011)

Just one last post from Toronto’s Little Girls for the night. This one a fuzzed up, post punk take on John Maus’s synthed out cut, “Believer”. Being a fan of Maus’s album, I’m surprised by how much I find myself preferring this darker, spookier take to the original. At any rate, they’re both pretty much excellent.

Colossal Gospel - Shadows of the Battlefield (Pat Benatar Medley)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Shadows of the Battlefield” by Colossal Gospel // A medley of Pat Benatar classics (2011)

Well this is certainly interesting. Two of my favorite pop hits of the 80’s (“Love is a Battlefield” & “Shadows of the Night”) mashed up in a folksy Fleet Foxes style medley. Works for me. Though losing the epic belting of the “Shadows of the Night” (one of the best karaoke jams ever) leaves me wanting a little more, but there’s no denying that this is a pretty awesome rendition of two great pop hits.

Twin Shadow - Changes

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Changes” by Twin Shadow // Changes (2011)

Any chance to hear new music from Twin Shadow is always welcome. Today the indie blogs are aflutter with this take on a 1982 Italian disco jam called “Circus Is Gone” by Bagarre. It’s a big shift from last year’s excellent, decidedly more mellow and chill affair, “Forget”, but George Lewis Jr and company keep it exciting and interesting with more of an upbeat electro-pop lean. Download it now from Gorilla vs. Bear

MGMT - All We Ever Wanted Was Everything (Bauhaus Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” by MGMT // Originally by Bauhaus

The Late Nite Tales series are always good for a chance to peak into the record collection of some of your favorite artists as they put together a collection of their favorite late night tracks for whatever party/come-down that they envision. It also usually brings with it a cover or two from the curating artist. The newest batch comes courtesy of MGMT and brings with it their psych pop cover of Bauhaus’s goth-pop gem, “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything”. Press play to hear that cover. It’s a good one.

Loney Dear - Will You Love Me Tomorrow (The Shirelles Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Will You Love Me Tomorrow” by Loney Dear // Originally by The Shirelles

I had a spare minute, so I thought I’d pop up this special little cover of The Shirelles’ classic “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” by Loney Dear that was recorded for Sverige Radio. I’m kind of a sucker for indie bands covering late 50’s teen love songs, so this is right up my alley.

The Walkmen - Mr. Lonesome

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Mr. Lonesome” by The Walkmen // Originally by Johnny Cash (Live @ KEXP 9/7/2011)

The Walkmen swung by Seattle’s KEXP to perform a  handful of tracks while in town on tour, and it turns out they were in a Johnny Cash kind of mood because they played all Cash covers. OneThirtyBPM was kind enough to upload those and share them with the music loving world. Here, is my personal favorite of the bunch, their acoustic take on “Mr. Lonesome”.

Kim & Jessie (Featuring Jamie Jackson of Hot As Sun)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Kim & Jessie” by Tokyo Police Club (feat. Jamie Jackson of Hot as Sun) // Originally by M83

Continuing with the Covers Project, Tokyo Police Club whips out a cover of M83’s classic 2008 jam, “Kim and Jessie” and while it loses some of the haunting beauty of the original, it’s still a pretty sweet track with a beauty of its own. Definitely worth a couple of listens. Be sure to check out the Tokyo Police Club Soundcloud page to keep up with their 10 Covers/ 10 Years/ 10 Days project.
