Everything In Its Right Place (One I Love)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“The One I Love / Everything In It’s Right Place” by Radiohead // Live in Japan (10.5.08)

It’s a slow weekend and I felt like breaking into some of the old tracks that I hadn’t listened to in a while. While doing so, I stumbled across this soundboard recording of Radiohead mixing R.E.M.s “The One I Love” with “Everything in it’s Right Place” and it certainly has been a few years since I laid back and fell in love with this, so why not share it on the main page until I discover something fresh and new to share.

* Interesting side note: Radiohead being my favorite band, the first time I ever saw them live was while they were opening for R.E.M.

Au Palais - Some Velvet Morning

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Some Velvet Morning” by Au Palais // Originally by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra

It’s good to hear something new from Au Palais, and this ominous, sexy take on the classic track from Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra is more than enough to excite my ears. The original is a masterpiece and Au Palais put a solid goth-drone-ethereal spin on the track to make it all their own. Definitely worth checking out for fans of Blouse, Trust, and Porcelain Raft

Siouxsie and the Banshees- Kiss Them For Me (School of Seven Bells Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Kiss Them For Me” by School of Seven Bells // Originally by Siouxsie and the Banshees

I’d forgotten about this Record Store Day release from School of Seven Bells until it just crossed my feed and reminded me that it required posting. Here you will find School of Seven Bells taking a rather sonically aggressive take on “Kiss Them For Me” by Siouxsie and the Banshees. It’s loaded with layers of buzzsaw synths, tribal electro beats, and swirling ethereal synth lines, but deep down there is that excellent Siouxsie melody that made the jam such ear candy years ago. Definitely worth checking out.

Radio Slow Riot - Episode Eleven

RADIO SLOW RIOT // EPISODE ELEVEN (4.20.12)

The delay between these mixtape/podcasts seem to be growing during these busy months, but if anything, it truly allows for a stronger over compilation. This episode is all new music (with a couple of recent re-releases for good measure) and brought with no interruptions (outside of the intro), and a focus on dream pop and lo-fi with the occasional shoegaze and ambient track peppered throughout. You might also notice there are several covers this time around and that’s purely coincidental, as there just happen to be some great covers popping up as of late. I digress. I’ll leave the music in your hands.

Ask (Brothertiger Cover) - The Smiths

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Ask” by Brothertiger // Originally by The Smiths

I somehow missed this when posted early last month, but allow me to rectify that with a post in the present. Brothertiger have gone and put their shimmering stamp on The Smiths’ classic “Ask. Luckily, Brothertiger hasn’t strayed far from the original, instead just doing what they do best (dreamy synths, layered vocals, glo-fi production), while adhering to the brilliant melody and hook of the original. A must listen for fans of the original or fans of Brothertiger in general. A wonderful take on the classic.

Niia - BTSTU

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“BTSTU” by Niia // Originally by Jai Paul

This gorgeous, sexy, haunting cover of Jai Paul’s (shit-hot and brilliant as hell) BTSTU has been floating around for a few months, but I never really remember seeing it around, so I thought I’d highlight it on a slow Saturday. Niia takes the original’s abstract beats and strips them clean, leaving only her own backing vocal and the quiet hum of a synth line pulsing in and out and guiding the way. It’s a pretty stellar take and a nice track to remember while getting excited for Jai Paul’s next move (“Jasmine” was a nice reminder that he’s not a producer to turn your back on). Give Niia’s version a spin. It’s a killer take on a spectacular jam.

Blouse - Pale Spectre

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Pale Spectre” by Blouse // Originally by The Wake

Last year we got two wonderful covers of The Wake songs (by Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing) for record store day and this year, we get Blouse (and Craft Spells) doing the special Record Store Release. Luckily, Blouse has gone and posted a killer dream pop take on “Pale Spectre” from The Wake’s excellent 1987 EP, “Something That No One Else Could Bring”. It’s heavy post punk bass line guides the hymnal like synths while the ghostly vocals lock you into a lush lullaby sound. It’s a wonderful track from a great, underrated band, paying tribute to another excellent, underrated band from the past. Highly recommended.

Japandroids - Jack the Ripper

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Jack the Ripper” by Japandroids // Originally by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Japandroids are a killer band. They absolutely slay live shows and their records are always as infectious and catchy as they are potentially hazardous to your ear drums. Hearing that they were taking on one of my other favorite artists got me all excited inside, but actually hearing their take on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ classic “Jack the Ripper” is an absolute feast for the ears. They don’t change things up drastically, but there is a distinct tonal shift from the original’s macabre, drunken hymnal to the new versions bluesy, post punk shredding comes off as more of a terrifying warning that just happens to come inside of a brilliant, infectious pop song. Absolutely must hear. In fact, it’s already catapulted me six months ahead of schedule and has me wishing it were Halloween so that this track could lead off some Halloween mixtapes.

* “Jack the Ripper” can be found on the 7” “The House that Heaven Built” by Japandroids (out 5/15/12 via Polyvinyl)

Xiu Xiu - Always

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Always” by Xiu Xiu // Originally by Erasure

Polyvinyl has been kind enough to stream their Record Store release of a split 7” between Xiu Xiu and Dirty Beaches. Each artist provides a cover (Xiu Xiu does Erasure and Dirty Beaches does Francoise Hardy). Stream both at Soundcloud. The Xiu Xiu cover is quite good (not a big surprise) as it sticks fairly close to the original, but also ratcheting up the sinister bass line and synths making the whole thing decidedly unsettling in the best way possible. Definitely check it out.

Black Tambourine - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” by Black Tambourine // One Two Three Four EP (2012)

Black Tambourine could cover the phone book and i’d be interested in hearing it, so it’s with great pleasure that I listen to their new EP which is comprised of covers from the catalog of The Ramones. “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” is shifted from a power punk pop jam into a bleary eyed shoegazer and it fits the track nicely. Definitely something you should be listening to on repeat this evening.

OneTwoThreeFour is out 5/15 on Slumberland.

Sleigh Bells - Irreplaceable (Beyonce Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Irreplaceable” by Sleigh Bells // Originally by Beyonce

If you told me that Sleigh Bells were gonna be covering Beyonce, my initial thought would be that they would be bending one of Beyonce’s big hooks into their shredding beats, but surprisingly, they step right off their usual path and instead go for more of a heads up approach. The result is surprisingly solid. Alexis Krauss’s breathy, sexy take on the track works, and Derek Miller’s production work is restrained and effective, love that simple guitar. Good stuff.

Radio Slow Riot - Episode Nine

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

RADIO SLOW RIOT // Episode Nine (2.21.12)

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me and that’s certainly gone and cut into my podcasting time, not to mention the recent issue with Mediafire which caused all back catalog hosting to disappear (remedy coming soon) and it’s affect on free time. However, I managed to squeeze a mixtape/podcast out this week with some of the more exciting releases in the past couple of weeks, as well as a couple of choice older gems. I kept my intros light to maintain a solid vibe and flow and so I won’t drag it out here any further.

Frankie Rose - Soma

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Soma” by Frankie Rose // STROKED: A Tribute to “Is This It” (2011)

With this week’s release of Frankie Rose’s excellent album Interstellar, there will naturally be lots of people (rightfully) talking about her, and so I thought I’d dig out her wonderful contribution to Stereogum’s The Strokes tribute from last summer. It’s a little more rock than you might find on Interstellar’s new wave and synth leaning tracklist, but it’s a good sign of where she was heading with her sound. Definitely get out there and track down Interstellar if you haven’t already. It’s definitely one of the highlights of the year thus far.

Black Tambourine - What's Your Game

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“What’s Your Game?” by Black Tambourine // One Two Three Four (2012) // Originally by The Ramones

Black Tambourine have brought their jangly, fuzz pop out of retirement after 21 years for an EP of covers based on the songs of The Ramones. “What’s Your Game?” is the first taste and truth be told, this feels like it could have been recorded 21 years ago. This is a band not missing a beat, and just picking right back up where they left off, with warm fuzz pop riffs and killer hooks. This track also features backing vocals from Dee Dee of the Dum Dum Girls, Rose Melberg of Tiger Trap, and Jenny Robbins of Honeymoon Diary. A must listen for fans of the C86 sound.

Bon Iver at  AIR Studios // 4AD/Jagjaguwar Session

Seeing Justin Vernon surrounded by his massive touring band, churning out the jams on an ever growing stage is a magic thing, but it doesn’t quite hold up to seeing him and Sean Carey in a studio, just re-interpreting their songs into small, subtle, gorgeous re-inventions. This is absolutely incredible and well worth your time if you’re the slightest fan of the artist.
