It’s refreshing to hear something so stripped back and raw as this demo from Amherst, MA band, California X. They’ve recently signed with excellent up and coming label The Sounds of Sweet Nothing (Au Palais, Tashaki Miyaki) to release they’re debut single. In the meantime, you can check out their demo set at Bandcamp, which includes this indie rock throwback gem. Think of the years when the term “indie rock” meant something, and you’ll be getting close to what this sounds like. Definitely for fans of early Guided By Voices, early Built to Spill, and The Replacements.

Now this is a jam that I can see myself playing on repeat for a while. Haunting electro pulses and ominous synths with a soaring build. Hell, it’s apparently even an homage to the brilliant Patti Smith. What’s not to love? Au Palais has been on fire lately, and this is further gas to stoke that flame because this jam is white-hot and i’m officially obsessed.

The Sounds of Sweet Nothing has been on a tear lately with bringing excellent under the radar bands to the attention of the Bandcamp obsessives and perhaps my favorite of those bands is Tashaki Miyaki. Their particular brand of retro pop meeting fuzzed out dream pop and shoegaze sounds experienced and lived-in and not just like some tossed off exercise in genre-hopping. These guys get it and for proof of such things, look no further than the lovely, fuzzed-out, slow waltz that is “Get it Right”. For fans of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Buddy Holly, and Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound productions.
