Airiel - Funerals

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Funerals” by Airiel // Kid Games (2012)

Airiel first formed all the way back in 1997 and yet their output hasn’t been as much as you’d expect from a band that’s been around for 15 years. Several EPs, a handful of one-off compilation appearances and one full length are pretty much all that’s found it’s way to release. Luckily for fans of the band and for diehard shoegaze fans, they’re back with a stellar new EP that is loaded to the brim with gorgeous swooning guitars and reverbed atmospherics. Lead off track, “Funerals” sounds like “Disintegration“-era The Cure jamming with Ride. It’s a gorgeous, widescreen shoegazer that makes me want to dig out all of the old greats and get lost all over again. Highest recommendation for fans of Ride, Cocteau Twins, and Pale Saints

Pretender

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Pretender” by Black Marble // Weight Against the Door EP (2012)

Danceyrselfclean posted a new Bandcamp find from the good folks at Hardly Art’s new signing, Brooklyn’s Black Marble, and it’s a fantastic bit of lo-fi post punk. Both that track (“On My Head”) and this one (“Pretender”) are taken from a forthcoming EP titled, Weight Against the Door. If these tracks are any indication, Black Marble is absolutely a band to watch. For fans of the early years of The Cure, Little Girls, and Joy Division (and assorted other 80’s post punk).

:papercutz - Disintegration (The Cure Cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Disintegration” by :Papercutz // Originally by The Cure

“Disintegration” is one of my favorite songs of all so I’m always curious to hear others’ interpretations. Here, :Papercutz, offer up a jagged, pulsing, electronic spin on the original goth-pop anthem. It comes in at about half the run time of the original and that’s probably a good thing because toward the end, the layers are coming at such a breakneck pace that it starts to lean toward the schizophrenic, but luckily the band knows to pull back and in turn they craft a cool, electro-shoegaze spin on a class. For fans of I Break Horses and Austra

FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2007 (as chosen in 2007)

  1. “In Rainbows” by Radiohead
  2. “Sound of Silver” by LCD Soundsystem
  3. “Neon Bible” by Arcade Fire
  4. “Boxer” by The National
  5. (tie) “Person Pitch” by Panda Bear // “The Reminder” by Feist

* for some reason Spotify is missing most of these albums, so no playlist for 2007

These lists are getting closer to the present, so it’s getting harder to find too many faults with these lists. I would still pretty much agree with this list completely with the exception of switching the placements of Arcade Fire and The National. What can I say, “Boxer” was a grower.

Sure, if you look back through these lists you won’t be surprised in the least to see Radiohead in the top spot again, but truth be told, “In Rainbows’ is probably my favorite Radiohead album and I’m old enough to have actually bought “Pablo Honey” on cassette when it was released (my report card money wasn’t the best, sometimes I had to buy what i could afford and I distinctly remember not being able to afford the CD), so one could reasonably make the argument that “In Rainbows” is my favorite album of all time and your argument would be valid, but that’s an ever-shifting list if we’re talking “all time”, but it’s certainly a contender right next to “Strangeways, Here We Come”, “In The Aeroplane Over the Sea”, “Disintegration”, and “Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain” (to name but a few). Enough talk of Radiohead.

The rest of the choices stand on their own. I was not as taken with “Person Pitch” as many of my friends were that year, but it certainly hit me in the right place. I was just mostly obsessed with LCD Soundsystem’s giant leap forward with “Sound of Silver” for most of the year (Radiohead was a late year release). The Feist choice, is wholly representative of being unable to avoid it most of the year, but also because those are some incredibly well written pop songs sung by one of my favorite female artists on in music.

All in all, 2007 (for me), is one of the best years for music that I’ve ever experienced first hand. It was loaded with incredible albums and even more mindblowingly good stand out tracks. Let’s talk favorite songs, shall we…

THE GHOSTS OF HALLOWEEN /// PART|TWO

Back in the Halloween saddle here with a second collection of Halloween jams for your party or leisure needs. This collection leans closer toward the indie rock side of things. You’ll notice some classics and some songs that maybe you didn’t previously think of as Halloween songs per se, but do have a vibe that fits well within the season. Next time around will be a collection of dark electronic and dance influenced Halloween fun, which should drop on the page sometime early next week.

I hope that you enjoy the Halloween vibe and the darker atmosphere of the songs that would make for a solid listen with or without a blacklight-lit Halloween party behind them. Thanks for listening.

Motorama - Wind In Her Hair

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Wind in Her Hair” by Motorama // Alps (2010)

I’m still shocked that this album isn’t some insane cult classic yet. Sure, it’s got it’s fan base (oddly, i don’t think Pitchfork ever even reviewed it), but it is really good and it feels like it just sort of came and went last year. They’re a Russian band who sounds and feels like a UK band from 1984. Jangle-pop and post-punk (think of a Russian version of Felt, or if Joy Division had been more jangle-pop and less angular rock) with the occasional new wave synth line. I actually really dig the vibe on a couple of tracks to pull the long Cure-style intros before bringing in the vocals. This is on of those tracks. It’s great stuff and they’re actually giving the album away from free at FMA.

DAVID BOWIE // COVERED

Here you will find a collection of covers from Bowie’s catalog as performed by indie and alternative artists from the past couple of decades. I tried not to source too hard from any one tribute, and did my best to keep away from random live covers (there are only 3 included). All in all, I stuck with some of my favorites and some new ones that I had previously not known existed. Are there some covers that I missed - sure. Most of those were instances of choosing who I felt covered a particular track the best.

So without further ado, here are classic songs by David Bowie as re-interpreted by artists over the years.

Playlist (click the band name for more info on the band):

  1. bauhaus - ZIGGY STARDUST
  2. vivian girls - JOHN, I’M ONLY DANCING

THE CURE // COVERED

Here is the previously mentioned covers compilation featuring the music of The Cure. Lots of lesser known artists mixed in this time around because quite frankly, they were the best. Also, I wasn’t about to include 40 different versions of “Lovesong”, so the only duplicate tracks included are two very different takes on “Boys Don’t Cry”. Are there some covers that I missed - sure. Most of those were instances of choosing who I felt covered a particular track the best.

So without further ado, here are classic songs by The Cure as re-interpreted by artists over the years.

Snow & Voices - Disintegration (The Cure cover)

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

“Disintegration” by Snow & Voices // Originally by The Cure

In advance of the first episode of my covers podcast, I thought I’d post a single song that will be included in the first show. It’s a recent cover done by Los Angeles dream pop duo, Snow and Voices, and boy is it a good one. The original track is one of my all time favorite songs and it’s a massive track. What struck me about this version that really stood out was that where the original was had a sense of urgency and high emotion tied into the loss, this one seems more resigned to accept the fate of the failed relationship. It’s hard to cover one of the best songs of all time, but Snow and Voices do it justice here by stripping it back and leaving just the lament.
