Small Black - "Limits Of Desire" (Official Audio)

“Limits of Desire” by Small Black // Limits of Desire (Out Now via Jagjaguwar)

Small Black’s Limits of Desire is one of my most anticipated albums of the year, and over the past few weeks, I have spent a large chunk of time pouring over the album’s contents. Soaking in every soaring synth line and airy vocal hook that the album has to offer, and there are many. The one song that immediately grabbed my attention on first listen and has continued to demand the most replays, is the title track. “Limits of Desire” is a fairly straight forward synth pop venture for the band, but there’s something else at play that really captivates me and it’s the somber, yet uplifting tone of the song. Ethereal waves of airy synths glide over a lovely vocal melody, as a pulsing bass line and drum beat form a heartbeat through the spaced out atmosphere of the track. It’s a stunning beauty and for me at this point in the year, this is my favorite song of 2013 (so far). For me, it’s a perfect pop song.

Russians

“Russians” by pacificUV // After the Dream You Are Awake (Out 5.14.13 via Mazarine Records)

The new PacificUV album drops in a little less than a month and the pre-release tracks are starting to trickle out and they’re certainly doing their job of building anticipation for “After the Dream You Are Awake”. “Russians” is one of the tracks found on the new album and it’s a synth powered blast of space rock with a driving electro beat and an urgent sense of dread hovering above. It also finds the band stepping outside of it’s more comforting, blissed out dream pop by way of shoegaze sounds, and venturing into darker, more post punk rhythms, which is a nice fit. The new album drops on the 14th of May and if this track is any indication, we’re in for something really special. Highly recommended for fans of Cold Cave, New Order, and M83

StarWaves - Anthony Gonzalez (M83)

“Starwaves” by Anthony Gonzalez (M83) // Oblivion: Original Motion Picture Score (Out 4.19.13 via Back Lot Music)

Joseph Kosinski is a man after the hearts of lovers of epic electro anthems everywhere. On his first film, he managed to get Daft Punk to create a brilliant score for “Tron: Legacy”. Now, for his second film, “Oblivion”, he’s tapped Anthony Gonzalez, the man behind M83 to provide the score - with M83 providing a new song as a band entity as well. With the release”Oblivion” fast approaching, I was starting to wonder when we were going to get a taste of the new material, and now Back Lot Music has gone and tossed out a taste on their Soundcloud page. As you would expect, it’s a slow burner, slowly pushing ambient tones forward until a soaring synth orchestra breaks through the clouds in a burst of widescreen, cinematic beauty. Definitely something you’ll want to check out.

“Curtains” by Team Ghost // Curtains EP (Out 2.25.13 via wSphere)

Nicholas Fromageau’s Team Ghost is back with another blast of electro shoegaze to distance himself from the sounds of his former band, M83. As Team Ghost progresses and morphs into it’s own entity, the sound has shifted into something more dark, muscular, and intense. Here on the  title track of the band’s new EP, “Curtains”, we get a blast of jagged buzzsaw guitars that drive the rhythm as soaring synths and pitch black atmospherics clash and create something resembling that could be the score to the creepiest chase scene that you’ve ever seen on film, but that also just flat out shreds. This is a killer jam, and hopefully a sign of a stellar new intensity in the new material.

Keep Shelly In Athens - Madmen Love

“Madmen Love” by Keep Shelly in Athens // TBA (Available in July via Cascine)

Following a string of excellent EPs and singles, Keep Shelly in Athens is finally coming around to lay down their debut album. The first taste from this as-yet-untitled Cascine released album, is “Madmen Love” and it’s a pretty special treat. The band’s particular brand of sexy, Balearic-infused electro pop is shifted here - turning darker, more driven and pronounced - and the overall sound is all the better for having taken this step. The song takes a truly inspired turn at the 3:30 mark, when a pounding electro pulse takes the lead and the vocals take on near spoken-coda all the while a sinister sound sax line falls into place. It’s a pretty stellar track, and an exciting point for the new-album-interest to start growing. Highest recommendation.

“After Dark” by Warm Speakers // Six Tracks Recorded Quickly in the Strange Study of an Abandoned Estate in Search of the Perfect Reverb (2012)

Late last year, Patrick Berlinquette of Warm Speakers, released the excellent album, “Worry Not Lonely”. Soon thereafter, he released a small EP of outtakes and experiments, which I never got around to properly highlighting, despite it containing some genuinely excellent sounds. Lately, I’ve found myself doubling back and listen to that collection several times, in which “After Dark” has been on heavy rotation throughout that time. The shadowy rhythm bleeds into a shimmering, melancholic guitar that feels like the sky is opening up. It’s the kind of track that you want to go on forever, like some of those gorgeous cresendos that Explosions in the Sky use to break your heart with - “After Dark” is comprised completely of that feeling. It’s a stunning, cinematic sound that deserves to be played on repeat, into the late hours of the night. It’s a gorgeous piece of work.

PMW’s FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 2012
Here go the full lengths. These are this year’s albums that I most adored from front to back. Certainly, much could be said about each album, but in an effort to keep this short, I’m going to try and keep myself concise and provide with links to seek out the material in your own way.
Once again, I can’t stress enough, this is not a “Best Of” list. These are my favorites from the year, and the order could change on any given day (outside of the top 5 or so, which are pretty steady). My hope here is to point out some albums that might inspire you to seek them out, or hell - make a list and share your own. Whatever the case, you can’t go wrong with these twenty wonderful albums, born in the year 2012.

20.) “Beams” by Matthew Dear - One or the best dance/electronic albums witha real heart since LCD Soundsystem left the game.
19.) “Calendar” by Motorama - A Russian shoegaze band doing it as good as anyone. Deserves massive exposure.
18.) “S/T” by Melody’s Echo Chamber - Gorgeous, dreamy psych pop. Like a female fronted Spiritualized.
17.) “Space Between Us” by Daniel Land & the Modern Painters - If Coldplay became a dream pop band and worked with Robin Guthrie instead of Brian Eno. Super good orchestral dream pop.
16.) “Shields” by Grizzly Bear - A more mature, challenging, rock record than I expected. They’re pushing into some wonderful experimental sounds.
15.) “Nootropics” by Lower Dens - A swirling blend of ambient, synth pop, and psych pop that unravels more wondrously with each listen.
14.) “Interstellar” by Frankie Rose - A big gorgeous pop record that sounds equal parts the Cure, Deerhunter, and M83 boiled down into a killer lo-fi synth pop sound.
13.) “Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend” by Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Returning after a too-long hiatus and sounds just as powerful and vital as ever. Epic is an understatement.
12.) “True” by Violens - Dark, textured, and haunting dream pop that never misses a false note. Everything about it feel rich and real.
11.) “Celebration Rock” by Japandroids - A modern day Replacements who blast through songs with fist pumping urgency and an incredible command of a catchy hook. Some truly wonderful songwriting as well.
10.) “Tender New Signs” by Tamaryn - The most pure and ethereal shoegaze album of the year.
9.) “Heartbreaking Bravery” by Moonface (w/ Siinai) - An aggressively challenging album loaded with explosive emotion and killer hooks. Some of Spencer Krug’s best writing to date.
8.) “Channel Orange” by Frank Ocean - What else is left to say? This guy is an amazing producer, writer, and singer. He’s absolutely the real deal.
7.) “Soft Fall” by Sun Airway - Criminally underrated. A stunningly gorgeous surrealist dream pop album, layered and textured to sound totally original.
6.) “The Haunted Man” by Bat for Lashes - A massive achievement in big, lushly orchestrated pop songs that further proves what an incredible talent Natasha Khan has turned out to be - beautifully written and performed. One of my favorite voices in music today.
5.) “The Wilderness” by Cemeteries - Popping up seemingly out of nowhere, late in the year was this absolutely captivating bit of shadowy dream pop, wrapped in infectious hooks. Every song is a winner and if their is any justice in the world, “The Wilderness” will find a massive audience.
4.) “Kill For Love” by Chromatics - It took four albums, but finally I was drinking the Chromatics Kool-Aid. A lush and rich, dark, shadowy album perfect for late nights. It’s music for the dark, and it’s perfect.
3.) “Heaven” by The Walkmen - An immensely enjoyable album of big hearted rock music. An ode to growing old and getting your shit together. So consistent and powerful with every track. Some incredible writing here as well. Its nice to hear something that leaves you feeling optimistic and this late in the game, The Walkmen leave me feeling just that.
2.) “Total Loss” by How to Dress Well - Tom Krell returns with another heartbreaking, but equally soul stirring album full of power. Despite the often melancholic vibe of the overall affair, the album never feels depressing, but more celebrates life. A true original. Every ounce of this album is special.
1.) “Oshin” by DIIV - Clearly, I’m a dream pop fan, and this is the album that I feel like I’ve been waiting for for years. A dark counterbalance that hovers over the dreamy sounds keeps the album sounding original and vital. Every song has a killer hook, and just finds it’s way to embed in your brain. The most truly pleasurable listening experience of the year for me. It was my soundtrack from the moment I first pressed play. Perfect.

Perfect.
There you have it. Albums, EPs, and Music Videos down - Songs to go. Hope you find something to love here - I know I love every note.

Dark Orange - Unter dem Schnee

“Unter dem Schnee” by Dark Orange // Horizont (Out Now via Kalinkaland)

It’s not always necessary to have a strong grasp on the language in which a particular music is being sung - case in point, Germany’s Dark Orange. “Horizont” is the new album from the aforementioned band (available now on Bandcamp in a double disc size), and despite not understanding a single word being sung, I’m absolutely in love with the ethereal shoegaze that they have committed to tape. Sounding like a Burning Hearts by way of M83, with a little Cocteau Twins fanastical thrown in for spice. “Unter dem Schnee” is the first track on the album and it’s a perfect representation of what awaits you on the rest. Blissed out dream pop with a synthed up shoegaze sheen. It’s absolutely what you should be listening to on a chilly, late autumn night. Beautiful stuff.

“Faded Heart” by School of Seven Bells // Put Your Sad Down EP (Out 11.13.12 via Vagrant)

School of Seven Bells have been producing an exciting blend of electro pop and shoegaze for a few years now and despite being a big fan of their output since the beginning, I’ve been missing that sense of excitement that I first found on “Alpinisms”. Again, that’s no knock on what’s followed - they’re consistently putting out great tunes - but with the release of their new EP, “Put Your Sad Down”, I’ve finally found a song that grabbed in the same way that “Half Asleep” and “Connjur” did in the past. “Faded Heart” starts with a propulsive dance beat that sounds like it could be from a Robyn record (a huge plus) and layers on the airy vocal harmonies, electro pop flourishes, and soaring chorus that sounds like it could have been a monster hit on any dance floor from here to 1987. It all comes off like some timeless blend  that reminds me of what it might sounds like had there ever been a collaboration between M83 and Cocteau Twins. Yet, it’s all very School of Seven Bells - fresh, sexy, progressive and always shifting toward something new and interesting while keeping an eye on the gems of the past. Highest recommendation.

“Secret Days” by School of Seven Bells // Put Your Sad Down EP (Out 11. 13.12 via Vagrant)

Following rather quickly after the release of “Ghostory”, School of Seven Bells are already dropping a new EP called Put Your Sad Down (some tracks which were featured on a tour EP released earlier on this year’s tour). One of those tracks getting the proper release is the playful, new wave-ish “Secret Days” which feels positively like a lost b-side from Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Kiss Them For Me” era. Perhaps that explains School of Seven Bells having recently covered the alternative classic. At any rate, it’s always great to hear new dreamy electro pop goodness from School of Seven Bells, and a new EP right around the corner is icing on the cake. Highly recommended.

“On Your Mark” by Letting Up Despite Great Faults // Untogether (2012)

Today marks the release of the excellent new album from Austin’s Letting Up Despite Great Faults entitled “Untogether”. The album finds the band stretching it’s shoegaze influenced electro pop into dreamier and more subtle places. Frontman, Mike Lee told Paste that the album reflects a time of loneliness, and the feelings that come with losing relationships of all kinds, not just of the romantic variety. That’s very apparent on the lovely, “On Your Mark” - a subtle, shimmering dream pop lullaby that deals with not knowing when to say goodbye. It’s one of ten excellent tracks that on “Untogether” that you can now sample on their Bandcamp page. Highly recommended for fans of Silversun Pickups, M83, and (Mellon Collie-era) The Smashing Pumpkins

“Crystal Tears” by The Bilinda Butchers // Goodbyes (2012)

San Francisco’s The Bilinda Butchers have been around for a couple of years now, producing a chill, electro tinged dream pop. On their new EP, “Goodbyes”, you get some more of that particular sound, but you also get something a little out of the ordinary in the form of “Crystal Tears” which plays out like a Washed Out meets M83 style electro-shoegaze dance track. The synths surge in and out over a steady dance beat and ominous guitars. The distant, hazy vocals are a nice tough, especially when the harmonies kick in. As much as I love hearing their dream pop sounds, I must say that I really enjoy the hell out of this more aggressive, synth pop sound. You can actually grab the entire EP now at Bandcamp at a Name-Your-Price fee. Highly recommended.

M83 - Reunion (Sun Airway Remix)

“Reunion (Sun Airway Remix)” by M83 // Sun Airway Soundcloud (2012)

This remix has been floating around for a few weeks, but I’d somehow managed to get around to hearing it, so I’m posting it today. M83’s “Reunion” is one of those massive, widescreen, anthems that they do best, soaring vocals and propulsive beats. Sun Airway tends to keep things closer to the bedroom, more intimate and cerebral. Here, Sun Airway brings “Reunion” back down from the stars and into something more akin to a house party as opposed to the stadium sounds that fill “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming”. The mix is a total success, mostly because each artist succeeds so well in their own skills. This remix takes the original and adds a light, dreamy atmosphere to it, while maintaining the melody, but drawing back that massiveness into something that feels at home in your bedroom as well as the dance floor. Highly recommended.

Limited - You Must Be Dreaming

“You Must Be Dreaming” by LTD // You Must Be Dreaming 7” (2012)

Alex Craig, the man behind LTD (Limited), also does time in the excellent jangle pop band, Big Troubles, and that band’s penchant for killer melodies carries over into this new track from LTD. The interesting thing about this jam is that it’s brand of electro pop feels indebted to both the early 80’s synth pop scene (OMD, The Human League), as well as the current crop of electro-shoegazers (M83, I Break Horses). Hell, there’s even a smidge of Big Trouble’s style of dream pop dashed in there. The point being, LTD isn’t settling on a simple brand of sentimental bedroom pop for a side project, as it sounds already like a fully realized band with loads of promise. The old school electronic percussion and howling synths fill the air with a bouncy optimism and the hazy vocals and atmospheric production add kind of a lovelorn dance-ability that makes for an excellent intro to an artist that I’ll be eagerly awaiting to hear from in the future.

Exitmusic - White Noise

“White Noise” by Exitmusic // Passage (2012)

Exitmusic make dark, stormy music that can be rather intense but that is always easy on the ears. Their previous EPs are loaded with melancholic goth pop gems about  painful, battered love, but they always have a strain of accessibility that makes them beautiful and infinitely listenable. The Brooklyn two piece have a new full length out on May 22nd (now streaming on NPR) that stretches and expands those sounds into further dark and eerie places not unlike the sounds of Zola Jesus or Portishead. “White Noise” is a standout track that builds and crests into a driving, post punk flavored goth pop beast, before crashing back into dark, ambient, hushed sounds, before ramping back up again. It’s a piercing, dramatic track, but it’s a great listen. Check out individual track listens over at Secretly Canadian’s Soundcloud page. For fans of Zola Jesus, M83, and Portishead.
