Wampire - Das Modell
15,247 plays

“Das Modell” by Wampire // The Hearse b/w Das Modell (Available 3.5.13 via Polyvinyl)

I’m not sure if it’s intentional or not, but Wampire knows just how to crank up the volume on my Halloween love. On their excellent track, “The Hearse”, they brought the eerie organs and driving beat that sounded like some beautifully weird collaboration between Oingo Boingo, Wolf Parade, and John Maus, and here on that track’s B-side, they inject their brand of spooky-synth-punk into a Kraftwerk jam from thirty plus years ago. It’s another killer treat from a band that I’m always excited to hear more from - especially considering my penchant for anything that reminds me of the most wonderful time of the year - Halloween.

“Under the Milky Way” by The Church // Starfish (1988)

Halloween is almost gone, and considering it’s a Wednesday night and many of us are already home and stretching the day for as along as it will let us - I figured I would pick a song to lullaby 2012’s Halloween to sleep. “Under the Milky Way” by The Church has always been a song that felt like autumn to me. In particular, it had a Halloween feel to it, before “Donnie Darko” was ever made and helped solidify it’s seasonal connection. It’s the whole vibe of the thing that sells it as such - somber and carrying weight, but also featuring melancholic lyrics and eerie instrumentation. It’s a damn near perfect song, and a great one in which to say goodbye to this year’s Halloween. Hope everyone had a safe and fun season. Goodnight, Halloween.

“Do They Know it’s Hallowe’en?” by North American Halloween Prevention Initiative // Do They Know it’s Hallowe’en (2005)

Well, it is in fact Halloween, and I’ve done what I could to spread the seasonal cheer through mixtapes and song posts, so why not tack on one more for the last day - Halloween. This little gem here is a charity single from 2005 that features a plethora of artists who were either on the verge, or would soon become stars (also, a couple of just downright megastars as well). Featuring Win & Regine from Arcade Fire, Dan & Spencer from Wolf Parade, Beck, Karen O, Thurston Moore, Feist, David Cross, Devendra Banhart, Roky Erickson and a dozen or so more, this track crams everything in (spooky thunder, childrens choir„ animal grunts, spoken word intermission, talks of all things halloween, and generally great songcraft) and still comes in under six minutes.  It’s a fantastic little thing and a great track to help celebrate the best day of the year. So, please enjoy the sounds and of course, have a safe and happy Halloween!

Memory Tapes - Walk Me Home 2
from Halloween Mix

“Walk Me Home 2” by Memory Tapes // A Halloween Mixtape (2012)

It’s Devil’s Night and you’re probably going to need some sort of eerie music to help soundtrack your creeping. Luckily, Memory Tapes is back this year with another Halloween mini-mix to provide your ears with Halloween goodness. Here you will find a longplay track (just under 14 minutes) inspired by old horror film soundtracks - loaded with eerie synths, and hushed, creeping beats. It’s an excellent listen for the Halloween season, but hell - it’s so good that you could just use this to soundtrack any of your late autumn nights.

“Day 2 (Await)” by Blood Cousin // Last Night I Walked With a Zombie (Split) (2011)

For the past couple of years, Furious Hooves has been releasing splits for Halloween. Last year saw the first release, a split between Mumbledust and Blood Cousin, which saw both bands tackle dark folk tracks that celebrate the eerie music of the season. “Day 2 (Await)” is one of those tracks - the one from Blood Cousin - and it’s a pitch black beauty that sounds like the somber ballad of a low fog rolling in over graveyard. It’s melancholic guitar barely enough to rise the lovely, hushed vocals out of a whisper. Highest recommendation.

from A Haunting We Will Go-Go
505 plays

“The Ghastly Stomp” by The Ghastly Ones // A Haunting We Will Go-Go (1998)

It’s hard for me not to love the hell out of a band who commits so wholly to a sound as particular as the one in which The Ghastly Ones partake. It’s a surf-garage hybrid, sure, but it’s also entirely about monster movies. Gloriously goofy, and completely committed. These guys are a walking Halloween soundtrack, like Quentin Tarantino making a shitty late night monster movie soundtracked by The Black Keys. All fun and horror themes. It’s almost Halloween and I figure it’s a safe time to break out some of that zombie-surf-rockabilly fun. Happy Halloween!

Perhaps it wasn’t intended to be a Halloween song, but Clap Your Hands nailed the vibe when they released “Satan Said Dance”. It’s got the spooky atmosphere and oddball charm that makes it a perfect inclusion on any Halloween dance party playlist

“Zeros” by The Soft Moon // Zeros (Out 10.30.12 via Captured Tracks)

Dropping at exactly the right time of year, “Zeros” by The Soft Moon is a dark, heavy, hypnotic album that sounds like the soundtrack to a post apocalyptic dance party. For the past few years Luis Vasquez has been churning out pitch black post punk as The Soft Moon and this time around, he’s not changing the formula much - he’s only getting better at the execution. Here on the title track he brings a shimmering metallic guitar out to entice you into a barrage of tin drum beats, reverbed hand clap percussion, and warped vocal loops - it would sound like the score from a horror flick if it weren’t so fucking dance-able. Highest recommendation. THIS is your soundtrack to Halloween 2012.

“Anonymity” by HOUNDSds // The Chiller Part 2: House on Haunted Chill (2012)

Chill Mega Chill have recently released their second Halloween compilation, entitled “The Chiller Part 2: House on Haunted Chill” which is available now at Bandcamp for a whatever-you-can-pay price. The compilation is 24 tracks strong and touches on all sorts of your seasonal listening needs (everything from ambient to dream pop to blown out electro and experimental). One of my favorite stand outs is the track “Anonymity” from dream poppers HOUNDSds. Sure, it’s not loaded with creepy synths or spooky atmospherics, but the lovely track has a particular Halloween sentiment nailed down and that’s the desire to put on a mask and just walk in someone elses shoes for a while - anonymous to the world. I highly recommend spending some time with this track, especially for fans Wild NothingSaskatchewan, and Youth Lagoon.

It’s getting closer and closer to Halloween and therefore it’s my job to randomly pepper more seasonal sounds into the rotation. Here is an Atlas Sound giveaway from Halloween 2008, that still sounds great. I even featured this one on the most recent Halloween Mixtape (The Haunting Sounds - Vol. 4). It’s a creepy little lo-fi sing-a-long that lasts all of 94 seconds but it’s worth a listen and a share to help spread the mood of the season. Enjoy!

THE HAUNTING SOUNDS // A Halloween Mixtape - Vol. Four

Here is the fourth (and final) of “The Haunting Sounds” Halloween mixtapes (previous installments here) for your listening pleasure! So far we’ve made our from old school rock and roll classic onto the darker post punk sounds and then onto more dance and electronic sounds for the season. This time around we’re hitting more of all of those while sticking to some more popular bands and their eerier song choices, for one last Halloween shindig.

Below you will find a zip file and an mp3 file for your downloading pleasure. The MP3 is one long mix, while the other is individual tracks. Enjoy and please don’t be afraid to reblog and share with friends to help celebrate this fantastic time of year. Happy Halloween and thanks for listening!

“Spellbound” by Siouxsie and the Banshees // Juju (1981)

You could cherry-pick the entire Siouxsie and the Banshees catalog and create a pretty amazing Halloween mixtape. Sure, not everything they wrote was in reference to the holiday, but they have a vibe that kind of lives in the goth dance party vein - especially on their album, “Juju”. I’ve already posted their brilliant post punk, dance floor killer, “Halloween”, so it’s time I posted “Spellbound”. “Spellbound” is a welcome addition to any Halloween mixtape, with it’s swirling, hypnotic guitars, bouncing rhythm, and otherwordly vocals by Siouxsie Sioux

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead (Original)

“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus // Bela Lugosi’s Dead (1979)

It’s almost Halloween, and I haven’t done my job of peppering my posts with the occasional Halloween classic, so it’s time I make up for it. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is one of my all time favorites. It’s one of the earliest goth rock singles and it’s presence can still be felt in post punk and goth jams today. Even more impressive is watching the band tear through it still to this day with absolute precision. Watching Peter Murphy deliver absolutely killer vocals while hanging upside down from the rafters for the entire ten minute duration of this song without missing a beat is easily one of the highlights of my concert going life. Maybe I’m a sucker for a gimmick, but it worked. Of course, there’s also the absolutely seminal music video that was also the opening scene for the Tony Scott film, “The Hunger”. Everything about the song hits, from the eerie, lurching bass line to the way Daniel Ash’s guitar work shifts from haunting atmospherics to chunky riffage and back again to - of course- Peter Murphy’s brilliant vocals. It’s nine and a half minutes of Halloween heaven.
