“Don’t Ever Look Back” by Autre Ne Veut // Anxiety (2013)
Tomorrow finds a grip load of great albums being released (Girls Names, Atoms for Peace to name a couple), and one of the best (and perhaps, strangest) is Autre Ne Veut’s mesmerizing take on R&B experimentation, “Anxiety”. The brilliance of Autre Ne Veut lies in his ability to challenge R&B soundscapes, while staying within the genre. Things get weird, but this is always an album with R&B firmly in mind. Tracks shift and sway, bringing in dream pop atmospherics, swirling synth pop keys, ambient tones, and every other treat, but the soulful R&B vibe is always right there. “Don’t Ever Look Back” is one of many standouts - a shimmering, otherworldy treat that reaches strange heights of ethereal beauty before dropping straight through the dance floor and then ascending all over again. It’s a magnificent track that challenges and builds on the genre, and will hopefully open some doors for the brilliant mind behind the work. Highest recommendation.
