“Beginnings” by Houses // A Quiet Darkness (Out 4.16.13 via Downtown Records)
Houses are back with an album on the way (“A Quiet Darkness”) and a new track from said album to give a taste of what’s to come. From the first listen, you’ll notice a different sound is at play here - gone are the twinkling electro-bedroom pop sounds that have made up for most of the past releases, and in it’s place is a richer and full sound that is darker and more haunting than what we’ve heard in the past. “Beginnings’ has an almost post-rock sound, with it’s slow build to near explosive percussion and swelling strings (bowed guitar) that almost reach that Explosions in the Sky style crescendo, but show incredible restraint by pulling back just in time, leaving a pretty keyed lullaby and nothing else. To say you hear a little of The National in here as well, would make sense - but truthfully, you’re in fresh territory here and the song is all the better for reaching for something new. This is a phenomenal track. Highest recommendation.
