“Song for Zula” by Phosphorescent // Muchacho (Out March, 2013 via Dead Oceans)

Okay, immediately after posting my final year end list, i hear something so pretty that I almost immediately wanted to rewrite the top 50 in order to include it - but knee jerk reactions being what they are - I’ll give this one some more time. Seriously though, where has this Phosphorescent been all these years? I’ve been a mild fan over the years of Matthew Houck’s sad eyed folk poems, but this is a whole new level of beauty. The textures in the percussion and the layers of strings and synths build this soaring, cinematic folk ballad up like some triumphant beauty that closes out some melancholic-ally uplifting film that just broke and rebuilt your heart. It’s a fucking stunning thing. Absolutely highest recommendation.
