“Red Moon (The Walkmen cover)” by Cheval Sombre // Mad Love (Out 11.5.12 via Sonic Cathedral)
Christopher Porpora’s one man band, Cheval Sombre, will soon be releasing “Mad Love”, a spaced out collection of weary folk jams with a shoegaze lean. Contributing to the album are artists Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips (Galaxie 500 & Luna), Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3), and Andrew Vanwyngarden & Ben Goldwasser (MGMT). Naturally, that sort of team lends to the idea of having high hopes for the outcome, but the album has no problem meeting, and exceeding expectations - with it’s swooning, lovesick tales spun through psychedelic folk beauties. One of the tracks on the album is a dreamy, hushed take on The Walkmen’s “Red Moon”. Taking that songs melancholic waltz and turning it into a quietly strummed plea that is slowly enveloped by hypnotic, psych pop atmospheres. It’s really something beautiful to behold. Highly recommended.
